A pair of Canadian Pacific AC4400CWs running light down the Front Range Sub approach Independence Road in north Boulder. Another 1,000 feet or so and the power will come to a stop and wait for nearly two hours while the Valmont coal train switch on the main ahead.

Just north of Boulder, this Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest is slowing in order to comply with the decreased speed through town.

Just north of Boulder, this HPASSAG (with a rather colorful consist) is getting close to the end of its warrant at MP 25. Fortunately, the southbound ahead of this train will roll up its warrant to MP 17, allowing this manifest to continue without stopping through Boulder.

Anytime I can get a shot that looks as though it could have been taken in the 1980's (or so), I'll jump at the chance! In this telephoto shot, you can see the Longmont Turn coming down a slight hill just north of Boulder. Foothills Parkway is the overpass just visible in the background.

It seems like more often then not, the Laurel to Denver (HLAUDEN) runs with two C44-9W's on the point and one DPU'd on the back. It's nice when "the norm" is broken every once in awhile...true, they are still all C44-9W's, but at least all three are on the point!

The southbound HLAUDEN is on the approach to Boulder, moving along at 20 MPH. The train is relatively short today, with only 39 cars. This curve is at the south end of the Diagonal, where CO-119 and Foothills Parkway merge. I particularly like the trees along the tracks to the right.

The trains on the Front Range Sub are typically powered by C44-9W's in one of the orange BNSF schemes (H1, H2 or New Image). Every so often, though, you'll get a really unique consist on the point of a train. Such was the case here as two warbonnet SD75M's and a CEFX SD60 (of Soo heritage) lead the MDENLAU north out of Boulder.

When summer leaves, it leaves! The last day of summer saw clear skies and temperatures in the 70's and 80's. Two days later, temperatures are in the low 50's and it is raining. The northbound HDENLAU, with some nice power, is seen here racing north out of Boulder.

As I was coming out of work an getting into the car, I turned on the scanner an immediately heard a southbound getting a warrant at MP 35. The lead unit was BNSF 9798, so I though an SD70MAC would be a nice change of pace. Turns out I doubly surprised as two green and cream SD70MACs were the only power on the train, the Longmont Turn. The train is crossing 47th Avenue at MP 32, and I'm standing on the Foothills Parkway overpass.

There is a nice view of the flatirons in the background as the Loram rail grinder makes it way north at Independence Road in Boulder. The work train is just north of MP 32 and the Foothills overpass is visible in the background.

Just south of MP 32 and the Foothills underpass, this Loram rail grinder is slowly working its way north on the Front Range Sub. On this particular trip, only the rails on curves were being ground. The grinder was skipping right over the straight stretches.

In a semi-rare move, BNSF sent the STCPDEN-01A down the Front Range Sub without an orange paint scheme in sight! In fact, the power was extremely unique, with a BNSF warbonnet leading, followed by brand new KCS SD70ACe (#4009) and the BNSF 7920. The train is on the approach to Boulder here, about a half mile north of the Foothills Parkway overpass.

Of course the sun was still high enough to create a nice line through this former Rio Grande SD40T-2. That's okay though, because when it comes to these units, you have to take what you can get!

A southbound stack train approaches MP 32 on the Front Range Sub, and is being led by three thirty-year-old EMD's, the second of which was once a Rio Grande SD40T-2. It is now National Railway Equipment (NREX) 5398.
