A coal empty enters the block at East Portal, passing signals that are less than a month old. The new eastbound signals have two heads, allowing for eastbound trains to received a yellow over yellow (Approach Diverging) aspect for when they are taking the siding at Tolland.

One last shot of UP 1989 leading the westbound Snow Bus, sitting on the siding at East Portal. The train is scheduled to head west to Phippsburg, CO. This will mark the first time the Rio Grande Heritage unit has ever traveled on the Craig Branch. This will mean that the Rio Grande Heritage unit will have finally traveled on all of its namesake major routes, save Tennessee Pass (which no unit has run on in well over 10 years).

About a quarter of a mile away from the Moffat Tunnel, this Snow Bus has come to a stop on the siding at East Portal. DS-82 has informed the train that they will be meeting at least one (and possibly two) trains here before they will get their change to run through the tunnel. The temperature outside for this shot was a rather brisk 2°F (-17°C)...

A few trees are preventing this view from being really fantastic. The curve that the Zephyr is approaching in the distance leads into East Portal. In another mile, the Zephyr will be in the Moffat Tunnel under the Continental Divide, towering in the background.

It is quite possible that you have seen pictures from this location before (although not on my site until today!) ... One of those locations that I have always said "I'll get to it one of these days". Well, the day finally came! The westbound California Zephyr crosses over the road to East Portal as it makes its way toward the Moffat Tunnel. Note how difficult it would be to add a second track through here (if Tolland and East Portal were ever connected, as has been proposed in the past).

The familiar face of a P42DC shows itself as it comes around the corning on the main between Tolland and East Portal. On the western slope, the Ski Train has unloaded its passengers and is in the clear, allowing Amtrak to continue running right on time.

A coal load that just emerged from the Moffat Tunnel is on its way east. It is at the grade crossing near the east end of East Portal here. It will meet the westbound California Zephyr at Tolland and then have clear signals all the way into Denver.

Got snow? Looks like its been awhile since the siding at East Portal has been used as some snow has built up across the road crossing. A track maintainer had to clear snow from the switch points at the east end as the switch heaters couldn't keep up with the blowing snow.

A westbound manifest heads into the siding at East Portal to meet an eastbound coal load. Although it isn't snowing from above, the wind is blowing extremely hard and kicking up snow on the ground!

This coal empty is about to do something that is repeated thousands of times a year...make the 6.2 mile-long journey beneath the Continental Divide through the Moffat Tunnel! The curtain is up, the signal is yellow and the train has clear tracks ahead.

A few fall colors are still evident from up on Rollins Pass looking down into the valley where the Moffat Tunnel is located. The tunnel itself is actually obscured in fog, but an eastbound MRONY (tied down in the siding) and a westbound coal empty are visible.

An eastbound MRONY was tied down in the siding at East Portal. It is not very often that trains are tied down here! The siding most commonly used for tying down trains have had hand-thrown derails installed. Here, a "manual" derail was slapped onto the track.
