At the east switch of East Portal, the eastbound Zephyr rolls on with a trio of P42DCs leading. A few days earlier, an extra P42DC was picked up in Denver. The unit is called a protection unit, and is kept in Denver in the event a unit on the Zephyr develops an issue. One did the day the protection unit was picked up. My best guess is that one of these P42DCs will be dropped off in Denver to serve as the new protection unit. Of note, AMTK 161 (Phase 1 Heritage) is second out on the train.

It is 28°F as the on-time westbound Zephyr approaches a clear (green) signal at the east end of East Portal. Snow is covering the landscape and will likely remain in many places now until next spring.

The Westbound Zephyr, running right on time, is approaching the East Portal Road grade crossing, about a mile away from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. Many hikers (in the summer) and cross country skiers and snow shoeing enthusiasts (in the winter) come up to East Portal.

The Westbound Zephyr is about to knock down a clear signal at the east switch of East Portal. A very similar scene was repeated about an hour ago when the Winter Park Express passed over these same rails.

Welcome to the highest point on any mainline still active in the United States! We are just over 9,100 feet above sea level at the east switch of East Portal, just over a mile away from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. Technically, the train does still have a little elevation to gain, as it will top out at 9,236 feet above sea level. Today's Zephyr, running a little tardy, glides through blowing snow and a chilly 5°F.

Running just about 15 minutes late, the eastbound California Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the east switch of East Portal. A smattering of aspen trees offer up a great backdrop for the train that, minutes earlier, was in the Moffat Tunnel.

I had originally hoped to head to the high country a week earlier, when more of the trees still had their fall colors. Even though a lot of trees had lost their leaves at this point, I'm not complaining about this shot of an eastbound coal load (with an SD70ACe on the point). The train just popped out of the Moffat Tunnel and will now descend roughly 4,000 feet in the next 45 miles.

The westbound MNYRO knocks down a clear signal at the east end of East Portal. At this point, we are up near 9,000 feet and about a mile away from the eastern bore of the 6.2-mile-long Moffat Tunnel. Another five weeks or so and the aspens in this area will be getting mighty colorful!

Lately, more and more SD70ACes have been appearing on coal trains on the Moffat. It is a welcome sight (and sound) to this EMD fan as coal trains have been all but dominated by GE, particularly since UP put all their SD9043MACs in storage due to frame issues. Here, an SD70ACe is third out on the head end of this westbound empty, charging west on rails hidden by falling snow at East Portal.

A coal empty enters the block at East Portal, passing signals that are less than a month old. The new eastbound signals have two heads, allowing for eastbound trains to received a yellow over yellow (Approach Diverging) aspect for when they are taking the siding at Tolland.

At the grade crossing at East Portal, this westbound autorack train is about to enter the Moffat Tunnel to continue its journey west. Sure is great seeing a Rio Grande Tunnel Motor on the point! This was, however, rather early on in my photography career, so the quality is not the best.
