Not far south of Nunn, I got a good shot (in good light, that is) of UP 6936, the only DDA40X left on UP's roster.

The MNYNP is passing through Pierce on its trip north toward Cheyenne. The train is fairly unremarkable on this day with a string of covered hoppers. Granted, the statement "fairly unremarkable" does not take into consideration the DDA40X in the consist.

A great profile shot of UP 6936, the only active DDA40X left in existence. Granted, in this instance, it is DIC (Dead In Consist) for the trip to Cheyenne due to some mechanical issues that need to be worked out.

A couple miles north of Ault, UP's MNYNP is rolling north toward Nunn where it will take the siding. UP 6936 was set out in Denver due to mechanical issues after leading an engineering special over the Moffat the day before. Here, it is being moved back to Cheyenne.

While the engineers side of UP 9871 (ex-DRGW 5401) looked practically pristine, the conductors side looks like this. Taggers did a real number on this Tunnel Motor...unfortunately.

A look at a funeral train which is transporting 21 units (17 tunnel motors) from Ogden, UT to Denver, CO. Once reaching Denver, the units will be moved to Burnham and placed in storage until they can be auctioned off.

This was the third to last SD40T-2 that Rio Grande received. This was DRGW 5411, delivered in March 1980. The unit is headed for retirement at Burnham in Denver. Appropriate, considering the time it must have spent at Burnham over the years.

A side view of a snoot-nose SD40T-2 headed for retirement. This tunnel motor started off as Espee 8330 when delivered in April 1979. So as of this photo, it had just celebrated its 31st birthday.

This was the second Rio Grande unit that came on the property in October 1974. While many tunnel motors received a full repaint over the years, this unit was only patched! It'll be retired off UP's roster as it is seen here, and it'll spend its time at Burnham in Denver.

In January 1977, this unit arrived on Rio Grande's property as DRGW 5382. 22 years later, the unit was renumbered to UP 4008. It then lived as UP 8578 before being moved to UP 2900. After 33 years of service, this unit is headed for retirement at Burnham.

This unit has a long history of numbers! It was delivered as DRGW 5351 in in October of 1974. It was then painted in Espee colors and fly letters after the Rio Grande / Espee merger. After the Espee / UP merger, it was renumbered to UP 4004 on March 29, 1999. It kept that number for less than a year. It moved to UP 8574 on March 17, 2000 to make room for the SD70Ms. UP then moved it one more time, to UP 2885 on December 20, 2002. Just over seven years later, it is off to retirement.

I suspect there is a good chance that this going to be the last time that I will be able to shoot multiple tunnel motors on the mainline. This is a "funeral" train and every unit in this picture is dead, on its way to retirement.

Talk about a serious passenger train! The Ringling Brothers circus train is just shy of a mile in length. The train carries all the performers, all the animals and all the equipment for the show from city to city. Here, the train is just passing through Denver as it runs from Colorado Springs to Las Vegas, NV (via Cheyenne and Salt Lake City).

Just north of the Adams Hold signal, UP 4791 has a windmill blade train rolling. The Denver skyline is a bit obscured by a rather humid day.

Just north of Ault, the sun has now set as the Ski Train continues north. I decided to get a shot from the east side of the train. You can clearly make out the outline of the F40PH's, as well as see the windows along the La Plata Peak.
