In addition to picking up and dropping off passengers, Fraser is a designated smoking stop. The Zephyr is a nonsmoking train these days, so there are a few stops where passengers may de-train for a few minutes to get their fix. This is the inside of a Superliner I Sightseer Lounge car. Passengers get to stretch their legs briefly. This is a really great spot to shoot eastbound almost any time of day or year! Here, the crew will make a cut and tie down the back portion of the train. Then, two gondolas will be set out on the house track. The hill on the right side of the shot is used for intertubing in the winter. You can also see the ski run at Winter Park in the distance, and even a ski lift atop the mountain in the upper right hand corner. I sincerely hope that the train will run for another 69 seasons! The train holds on the siding at Fraser for four to five hours during the day while waiting to pick up skiers back at Winter Park between 3:30pm and 4:00pm. GE and EMD competed for the business and GE ultimately won with the P42DC. However, Amtrak did take a handful of F59PH's (EMDs answer to the F40PH).
