A look at the west switch of Plain (and tunnels 2, 3 and 4) from the siding. I took this shot out the windows of a Sightseer Lounge on the westbound California Zephyr! We are in the siding to meet this MRONY.

Somewhere between tunnels 4 and 8, my older daughter (Bella) looks out the window of our Sightseer Lounge toward the plains. This was her first Amtrak trip ever!

There is a good curve just west of Tunnel 16 that allows you to see the power on your train when you ride Amtrak. We are approaching the cut located downgrade from the longest tunnel on the eastern slope of the divide (not including the Moffat, of course), Tunnel 17.

I'm guessing it isn't too hard to figure out where this picture was taken! We are just about to dive into the east portal of the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel.

At Fraser, the westbound Zephyr makes about a 10 minute stop. In addition to picking up and dropping off passengers, Fraser is a designated smoking stop. The Zephyr is a nonsmoking train these days, so there are a few stops where passengers may de-train for a few minutes to get their fix. This is the inside of a Superliner I Sightseer Lounge car.

At Sulphur, we overtook a westbound coal empty. The empty took the siding a few minutes ahead of us. As seen here, we shot past lead unit just before entering Byers Canyon.

Between Denver and Glenwood Springs, there is a section of track between Flat and Kremmling when the Zephyr actual reaches speeds of 70 MPH. Here, at Troublesome, the House Track is rejoining with the siding as we bolt by.

After de-training at Glenwood Springs, my oldest daughter Bella is "holding up the train", while my youngest, Jaina, does a happy dance as it was a long 6 hour ride!

My daughter pose for a shot in front of the car we spent the most time in (the Sightseer Lounge). Meanwhile, the Lounge Car attendant looks on as he and the Zephyr prepare to depart westbound.

The onboard Conductor looks out the Superliner to make sure everyone is in the clear so that the Zephyr can complete its station stop and proceed westbound.

With its station stop complete, the Zephyr departs west on the east siding. At Center Glenwood, the train will cross back over to the main and continue on its journey toward Emeryville, CA.
