An unpatched Espee AC4400CW, one of only 13 left on UP's roster, leads up the MSIDV (Manifest, Salina to Denver). While the Espee unit hasn't received a patch, it has received a yellow frame stripe.

This is a scene that UP would stop tomorrow, if it were possible. This train is coming out of 36th Street on the Limon Subdivision. UP hopes that in the not-to-distant future, the CRIP (Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific) line between the Belt Industrial Lead and Sandown Junction will be restored. If and when that happens, coal trains will no longer traverse this section of track.

Sparks are flying! A closer look at the grinding operation doing what it is designed to do. You can clearly see the surface of the railhead getting shaved down a bit.

One of the cars responsible for grinding down the rail head. Note the flaps with the number hanging down alongside the base of the cars. The flaps help to keep sparks from flying away from the train. At switches (or other locations with trackside obstructions, the grinding ceases and the flaps rise up, allowing the train to proceed without causing damage to the trackside equipment, or the train itself.

The Harsco Track Technologies rail grinder train makes its way east on UP's Limon Subdivision. Smoke pours off the three cars responsible for grinding. Rail grinding smooths down the surface of the rail head, helping to extend the life of the rail.

Near Monaco Street on the KP Line, we get a good look at the Harso Track Technologies rail grinder. The train operates in a push-pull fashion to track that needs a second run can be easily accessed. The train consists of two modified F40PH's, two crew cars, three tank cars (fill with water), and two sensor cars.

I don't typically post photos of rail cars, but I thought this car was a reasonable exception! Built over thirty years ago, this former Rock Island boxcar clearly shows its heritage beneath its rusty exterior! The boxcar is now owned by the shortline Kyle Railroad in eastern Colorado / western Kansas. Its original Rock Island number was 300778.

Two units lead the eastbound MDVSI-26 on the Limon Subdivision. The train is moving at restricted speed as its track warrant is joint with another train. The Roydale Local (LDJ03) is working further east near Havana street and it too is occupying the main track. UP 3932 and crew must be prepared to stop in one-half the distance of vision of the track ahead.

UP 3932 east leads the MDVSI-26 east out of 36th street toward the KP. The train is passing over a BNSF track that is now abandoned (at least, this far to the south). There is actually still railhead buried underneath all that dirt!
