This is a scene that UP would stop tomorrow, if it were possible. This train is coming out of 36th Street on the Limon Subdivision. UP hopes that in the not-to-distant future, the CRIP (Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific) line between the Belt Industrial Lead and Sandown Junction will be restored. If and when that happens, coal trains will no longer traverse this section of track.

Snow-capped peaks offer a nice background for this eastbound coal load, moving quickly along on the main at Sable. The train has a warrant east toward Limon.

Some of the newest power to come out of Erie, PA has been slow to show up on coal power in Colorado. However, two days after Thanksgiving found this four month old ES44AC on a westbound coal empty, holding the siding at Mesa for a meet with an eastbound.

The conductor from a westbound coal empty in the siding at Mesa gives a wave to an eastbound coal load moving at track speed on the mainline. The conductor will give the train a "roll-by", making sure there are no defects with any of the cars.

At Ulster Street - also the former and possibly future location of Sandown Junction - this westbound coal empty has received word from 36th Street that the train can run around the wye at the yard and move toward the Belt Industrial Lead and the Bypass Track at North Yard.

BNSF's HPUEPVO (Pueblo to Provo manifest) has a very colorful consist as it heads west at Leyden. An SD70MAC, still in green and cream, leads up a C44-9W and a "Dark Future" CSX ES44DC.

As I was growing up - back when Rio Grande was still alive and well - I never would have guessed that I'd be seeing regular BN (let alone BNSF) trains on the Moffat! Here, BNSF's trackage rights train - the HPUEPVO - rounds the corner toward the grade crossing at Blue Mountain

When its winter time in Colorado, 2 o'clock in the afternoon can start to feel like "late in the day"! BNSF's Pueblo to Provo manifest climbs through the curves at Coal Creek Canyon toward Tunnel 1. The last two cars of the train are just barely visible on the left side of the picture.
