A westbound coal load works its way through the sweeping curve just below Tunnel 29. Many a shot of a Rio Grande train was once taken here...unfortunately, the trees have grown enough that they largely obscure the view now.

After meeting a westbound coal empty at Cliff, this BNSF manifest is making its way through Crescent. The train had a pair of Warbonnet Dash-9's on it...of course the better looking of the two units was trailing!

BNSF's Provo to Denver trackage rights train makes it was east at Plain. The train is just coming through the appropriately named Rainbow Cut. Two Spring snow storms in the last week have left a lot of snow hanging around on the ground.

This was a bit of a surprise! Southern Pacific originally had 279 AC4400CWs on the roster, numbered 100 to 378. As of this picture, there were only 13 of those 279 left and unpatched on UP's roster. Not only was SP 343 in Colorado on this day, but it was leading the MSIDV-26.

An unpatched Espee AC4400CW, one of only 13 left on UP's roster, leads up the MSIDV (Manifest, Salina to Denver). While the Espee unit hasn't received a patch, it has received a yellow frame stripe.

A trio of EMD geeps, on lease to Union Pacific, sit waiting for their next assignment in Denver's 36th Street Yard. In a world presently dominated by UP Armour Yellow and BNSF Orange, seeing maroon, white and blue makes for a nice break!

A GP38-2 and a GP15-1 work on a switching job in the yard. UP 695 is a remote control unit, and the operator is at the back end of the string of cars.

Even though there isn't any evidence of it in this picture, March is the snowiest month of the year in Colorado. Consequently, UP has been keeping this snow bus on hand, just it case it is needed.

If there is a snow storm in the the area that shuts down highways, this snow bus can be used to transport crews.

Well, it is official! Pecos street is closed at the tracks (near Utah Junction) and a two-year-long Form B has been put in place on the tracks. A new overpass will be built here over the next 12-18 months, so traffic on Pecos will no longer need to worry about coal trains.

Union Pacific has a few Track Geometry cars that it keeps on its roster. These cars are self-propelled, can go up to 70 MPH, and can record every detail about and defect in the rails as they move along. I happened to come across the car sitting in the storage yard in North Yard on this Saturday afternoon. I came in on the Limon Sub earlier in the day, and should be heading for the Joint Line the next day.
