Hard to believe UP's heritage units have been around long enough to now be referred to as "old friend". UP 1989 was unveiled at North Yard in Denver nearly 17 years ago (as of this photo). In the 1890s, the railroad primarily operated in Kansas and Texas, resulting in the abbreviation "K-T" or "KT" be used. It didn't take long for the nickname "The Katy" to be adopted by the railroad. It happened to be in Denver in September 2005, just a month after being unveiled, and I was able to find it. The train struck a pedestrian at 124th Avenue in Commerce City. I was at 120th Avenue, four blocks to the south. The crew made an emergency call to DS86 to report the incident. The train came to a stop and first responders were there almost immediately. I left and headed home right after this quick shot showing a cop arriving on scene, having a bit of a hard time keeping it together on the car ride. Nothing but prayers for the family involved and the steam crew onboard UP 844. The train remained stopped for nearly four hours as police investigated.
