The crew has moved from UP 5898 and is now in the cab of UP 1616 as they run north alongside the passenger equipment, which is (of course) currently without power. After reaching the back of the train, the power will tie on, pump up the air, and depart north toward Brendel.

UP 5898 and UP 1616 have cut away from the passenger special here at Potash, UT. The power is going to run around the train and hook on to the back to pull the train back north the 35 miles to the mainline.

Union Pacific's 18-car passenger special has come to a stop here at Potash and several folks, including upper Union Pacific manage, it getting of the train here to presumably head into Moab for awhile. Within an hour or so, the train will head back north on the branch line and ultimately continue on to Salt Lake City, mostly after nightfall.

Long before reaching the Grand Canyon, there are numerous other extremely impressive canyons that the Colorado River passes through. The canyon here at Potash, UT is no exception, with steep, red rock walls on both sides of the canyon. UP 5898 and UP 1616 are slowing to a stop to allow several passenger to detrain here at Potash.

After a five hour run from Rifle, CO, this UP passenger special is finally arriving at its initial destination in Potash, UT. Here, many of the managers (likely the "C-Level" managers such as CEO Jim Vena) will detrain and board the motorcoach that is waiting to take them to Moab. Note the multiple railfans (myself included) parked for some shots of the train. While it is difficult to see details, the gentleman in the dark suit walking alongside the train is one of several Union Pacific special agents that followed the train on the highway, keeping an eye on the right-of-way, ensuring the trains safety.

UP cleaned every nook and cranny on UP 5898, which is wearing UP's new official paint scheme, for it to lead this passenger special which includes "C-Level" managers from Union Pacific. As you can see, the new paint scheme has removed the wings from the nose, and moved the American flag from the long hood to the nose. While I do not know the reasons for the changes, I would speculate that this new scheme is a little less expensive, with a smaller American flag and no wings on the nose to contend with.

The final few miles of the Cane Creek Subdivision follow along Potash Road, current still quite a little ways below the tracks, both following the winding Colorado River. The rock formations you can see if you are lucky enough to be on this passenger special are simply amazing.

Just beyond the cut at the south end Bootlegger Canyon this UP passenger special continues south toward Potash. The train has roughly seven miles left on its journey. If you look closely, you can see a nice photo line of railfans set up at the south end of the cut on the right side of the picture. They are standing on the Corona Arch Trailhead, which happens to cross the tracks!

This pretty much is as definitive "end of track" as you can have! The Cane Creek Subdivision comes to an abrupt end with a huge pile of red rocks and a sudden drop off at the south end of the Potash facility, 37.4 miles south of the mainline at Brendel.

The Potash Local has hauled the inbound 36 cars as far as they can. They will now cut the two GP40Ns away from the train, tying it down first, and then return to the outbound train at the north end of the facility.

With the outbound train blocking the opposite track at the north end, the crew of the Potash Local must bring in this string of inbound empties all the way to the south end of the tracks so the two GP40Ns can run light and cross back over to the clear track to the north.

And overview of the tracks at Potash. 26 loaded outbound cars are sitting in the distance, a pair of units charging the air for the return trip to Grand Junction. Meanwhile, the crew of the local brings the 36 inbound empty cars to the south end of the facility.

Very tragically, a forklift made contact with an overhead high voltage power line on November 10, 2018. Three men that worked for Intrepid Potash were electrocuted and, unfortunately, lost their lives in the accident. A very beautiful memorial to the three men has been erected by Intrepid Potash in 2020. The Potash Local slowly rolls by in the background, ready to spot a string of cars.

I can certainly think of worse views to take in while working than this! The Potash Local is pulling a string of 36 empty covered hoppers in near the Potash mine, a pair of GP40Ns currently in charge of the cars. Of note, UP 1540 was originally delivered to Western Pacific in April 1980 as WP 3550.

While two of the Potash Local's units sit on the outbound cars, charging the air line, the crew takes the 36 empties down the inbound track to be spotted at the industry for the Potash switcher to handle.
