An eastbound grain shuttle approaches the grade crossing at Simms Street. The 108 car train is an interesting mix of older covered hoppers and some very new hoppers as well.

These CitiRail ES44ACs were fairly common to see a few years ago when BNSF was experiencing some power shortages. They don't show up too often anymore, so it was pretty great catching two of them on the Provo-Lincoln.

Quite a variety of power on this eastbound Provo-Lincoln manifest. The second unit is a (fairly new) ET44C4. The third and fourth units are CREX ES44ACs. BNSF leased a lot of these CREX units back in 2015 as there was a boom in traffic and a shortage of power. These units are now far less common to come across.

76th Avenue, just off of Simms Street, turns into a private drive not too far to the west of this shot. As a result, mailboxes for the houses stand along the public section of the road. Whereas they normally stand in relative peace, the quiet is broken as a coal train rumbles east toward Denver.

The City of Arvada is almost exclusively residential. Other than some (relatively) light commercial zoning, most of the city is housing and neighborhoods. The Moffat cuts right through it, passing by roads, mailboxes, and trash cans!

In order to keep the speed under control, the engineer has had to increase the train's air brake application. The result is a bit of smoke being generated from the brake shoes rubbing against the wheels. The train is leaving Leyden and approaching the grade crossing at Simms Street.

An eastbound manifest rolls through the grade crossing at Simms Street. There are some flaggers stationed at all the grade crossing through Arvada. Their job will be to protect grade crossing as maintenance equipment that doesn't trip the crossings come by.

An eastbound manifest approaches the grade crossing at Simms Street under partly cloudy skies. Personally, partly cloudy skies like this are my least favorite conditions to shoot in. Clouds move in and out of the scene and can wreak havoc on settings.

The eastbound MRONY passes by piles of ties along the right of way. Those ties will be installed over the course of the next week as the Moffat is entirely closed for maintenance.

The last two DPUs, bringing up the rear of the Public Service coal load, are about to cross Simms Street. Parallel to the tracks in 76th Avenue which, about 100 feet behind the photographer, turns into a private drive for the houses located along it. Their mailboxes can be seen standing here...how I'd enjoy one of those houses!

If coal trains do ever cease on the Moffat, I am going to miss the standard operation of three mid-train swing helpers found on each train. These units will be cut out of the train at the Pecos Crossover and go into North Yard for servicing. Typically, the units would have been sent west again for swing helper service. But with so few coal trains running right now, who knows if that'll actually be the case for these three units.

Coal is not quite dead on the Moffat just yet! A brand new ET44AC leads this eastbound "Public Service" coal train out of Leyden. 3 new gas generators have been built and are online at the Cherokee Power Plant in northeast Denver. One "old" coal burning unit is being converted to burn gas. Until that conversion is completed (sometime in 2017), this coal train will still run a few times a month.

A trio of ES44ACs make up the mid-train swing consist for this eastbound coal load. The three units, setup elephant-style here, will be cut out of the train at Pecos Street and will then likely return west to serve as mid-train swing helpers on another coal train.

On the final day of 2016, an eastbound coal train approaches the grade crossing at Simms Street in Arvada. Here's hoping that 2017 will see a bit of a spike not only in coal traffic, but in traffic on the Moffat in general.

This eastbound manifest has a trio of second-generation EMDs in the consist. A GP40-2 and two SD40-2s are being transported from Grand Junction to Denver. The units are being moved "DIC", which is short for "Dead In Consist".
