The weather on the plains was a little odd on this afternoon. In general, things were sunny...however, there were a few random flurries blowing around. In the summer, these probably would've been random rain showers. This UP special is just east of Strasburg and is approaching a Form B. The bridge over the tracks in Strasburg is being replaced.

This shot just screamed black and white to me. I really like the look of the long line of uniform tank cars. A single DPU pushes behind the "buffer" car located at the tail end of the westbound oil empty.

This UP oil train was borrowing some power from BNSF. It would have been great to have this good looking Warbonnet on the point, but having it facing the "correct direction" as the sole DPU works too. The train is passing through downtown Strasburg, CO on its journey west toward Denver.

As the push to move from coal to oil and natural gas continues, long unit trains of hoppers are slowly being replaced by long unit trains of tank cars. That's good news for some lines out there, one of which is the UP Limon Sub. Other than a daily freight and a few locals, the Limon Sub is primarily supplied by coal trains. Fortunately, oil trains will hopefully help to bring traffic to a line that is seeing a decrease in coal. Here, an empty oil train heads west through Strasburg, about 35 miles east of Denver.

A patched Espee AC4400CW brings up the tail end of an eastbound coal load as the train moves through Strasburg, CO. In the distance, some kids play tag in the park, apparently indifferent to the quick-moving eastbound. UP 6358 was SP 313 until receiving its yellow patch over a decade ago on May 30, 2003.

The Wagner Street overpass in Strasburg (which connects the town to I-70) offers a nice vantage point this eastbound coal load which includes an east coast visitor. If you look, you can just see I-70 near the top-left corner of the picture.

There is a long, straight stretch of track along the west end of Strasburg and a nice overpass in town from which to shoot from. In the distance, you can see I-70 and even Longs Peak, still standing tall along the Front Range.

After taking on some more power (err, water that is), the train rested for several minutes in Strasburg for a quick check of all the systems. There were probably three dozen railfans around taking pictures.

UP 844 slows down in preparation to take on water in Strausburg. Even though most of the train is hidden by steam, I really liked the way the steam appeared to roll up the hill.

It was a chilly day out along the Limon Sub, which made for some excellent steam coming out of UP 844. Temperatures stayed in the 40's and 50's with scattered showers.
