The skyline of downtown Denver stands tall in the distance, an afternoon thunderstorm having just dumped some rain on the city. Meanwhile, UP 8099 brings up the tail end of an eastbound UP manifest on it way in to North Yard.

The eastbound MGJNY rolls away from the camera, a single ES44AH bringing up the rear. A decent thunderstorm has formed and is pouring raining to the north and east of downtown Denver in the distance.

A single ES44AH brings up the tail end of UP's thrice weekly MGJNY. This manifest between North Yard, CO and Grand Junction, CO (and back) is the only regularly scheduled UP manifest that runs on the Moffat. Some afternoon thunderstorms are building and rain to the east is starting to fall.

This particular MGJNY was a really interesting one. The train was blocked in to a second of about 25 open hoppers loaded with coal and about 25 covered hoppers at the back. The train was not especially heavy, with two units on the point and a single DPU trailing.

The month of May is one of the best for getting outside and getting pictures along the Front Range. It is the one month when things tend to be lush and green. This morning is no exception as a refurbished P40DC leads a seven car Zephyr westbound.

After a few days of extreme haze due to smoke blowing down to Colorado from forest fires in Canada, things are slightly less hazy this morning as the Zephyr, running about 25 minutes late, heads west out of Leyden with the Denver skyline in the distance.

Just west of Leyden, two of Rocky Moutaineer's GP40-3s lead the westbound train. The Rocky Mountaineer is always a welcome sight as it breaks up a lot of the monotony that is typically seen on the Moffat. The train will spend the night in Glenwood Springs tonight before continuing on to Moab tomorrow.

AMTK 203, sporting a unique and colorful paint scheme, and AMTK 60 lead the westbound Zephyr west out of Leyden. In the background toward the ride side of the frame, you can see a CVS Pharmacy and gas station, either of which were there two years ago. Development in western Arvada continues to explode!

AMTK 203 is painted in a special "Operation Lifesaver" scheme, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the program. Amtrak unveiled the paint scheme about a year ago, in January 2022.

A pair of units bring up the tail end of the Provo-Denver as the train makes its way down the main at Leyden. BNSF's yard has requested that, instead of running down to Prospect Jct on UP's main, the train will instead cross over at Utah Junction from UP's main to the BNSF main. Most likely the yard has asked to do this in order to hold the train at Rennicks until the yard is ready for it.

Dynamic brakes whine as a trio of GEs work to control the speed of this eastbound Provo-Denver manifest as it passes by the neighborhood of Leyden Ranch, just west of the siding of Leyden. The train has a Clear (green over red) signal at the west end of Leyden as it has a straight shot down to Utah Junction.

A BNSF manifest, headed for Provo, UT, is not even 15 miles west of the yard in Denver at the start of its trip. Although the sun is now setting early in the afternoon, the low southern light makes for some pretty great shots.

After meeting a unit oil train at Leyden, UP 5107 - wearing a "wrap" to represent the Rocky Mountaineer - throttles up as it works to accelerate the train up to track speed. UP 5105, another SD70M wearing a wrap, is down for mechanical issues at the moment. So a non-wrapped UP SD70M is filling in at the moment.

BNSF trains have basically become the staple of the Moffat, particularly in the last 2-3 years. With coal virtually gone at the moment, and UP only running a manifest three days a week each way (so one manifest each of six days of the week), BNSF has kept some trains moving on the Moffat with an average of two manifests (one each way) per day.

For about six months of the year (April through September), early in the morning is a great time to get shots of eastbounds approaching Leyden from the north side of the tracks. The sun is far enough north to offer some pretty great morning light. Such is the case here with a trio of units leading BNSF's Provo-Denver.

A single SD70ACe brings up the tail end of this east UP coal load as is wraps around the fill into Leyden. The train will enter Bypass 2 at C&S Jct. The inbound crew (currently on the train) will cut out the mid-train swing helpers and leave them on Bypass 1. The outbound crew has been called and will take the train east later in the evening.
