At Palmer Lake, A train carrying a 570 metric ton "hydrotreater". The train is moving at no more than 10 miles an hour, powered by a single ES44DC, as it approaches the top of the grade and the start of double track.

This special train, making its way slowly up the Joint Line, was the very first look I got at BNSF New Image scheme, which was announced about a month earlier.

An up close and personal look at BNSF's New Image scheme. The railroad is now trying to move away from its Burlington Northern / Santa Fe heritage. The corporate name has been changed from "Burlington Northern Santa Fe" to simply "BNSF".

At Greenland, this ES44DC still has this special movement well under control. The peak in the distance is indeed Pike's Peak.

This 36-axle "Schnabel" Car was provided by Westinghouse Electric Corp to transport the hydrotreater seen here. The hydrotreater will be used at the Suncor refinery in Commerce City, CO where it will create low-sulfur fuel through heat and pressure.

By afternoon, this train (which left Monument several hours earlier) has finally reached Castle Rock. Several people watch over the movement of this large load, from inside as well as outside. Somewhat analogous to the "wide loads" you see moving on the interstates from time-to-time.

From a bluff just north of Sedalia, we get a good overall view of this special train. The hydrotreater being moved to Commerce City, CO came from Italy. It was said that the total cost of transportation (ship and rail combined) exceeded $3 million! Close to half that cost was just on BNSF alone.

This shot really puts into perspective the size of this hydrotreater, as well as the Schnabel car used to move it! The hydrotreater weighs 570 metric tons and is 115 feet long. It is also a bit wider than the average load, which is why signals and switch stands had to be (temporarily) removed at points along BNSF during the move. This was the largest item ever unloaded (to date) at the Houston Port Authority!

At Titan Road, the train carrying the hydrotreater is in the home stretch on its long journey! It has taken the train 19 days just to run from Houston to Denver. Not a simple operation by any stretch of the imagination!

The Westinghouse Electric Corp Schnabel car doesn't even come close to fitting on the bridge over US-85 in Littleton! Make you wonder if the cars on US-85 even gave a second thought to the rather unusual load...

About 10 miles remain on its 10,000 mile journey! The hydrotreater on board came from Italy and is destined for the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City. This was the last I saw of this train as it was getting late in the day.
