For the 2005 Cheyenne Frontier Days, the amazing guys in the UP Steam Program got UP 844 (4-8-4) and UP 3985 (4-6-6-4) ready to head the northbound passenger special from Denver to Cheyenne. Here, the train is moving fast just south of Hazeltine, CO.

After having bearing problems at Ft Lupton, UP 3985 was cut out of the consist. Here, UP 844 leads the Cheyenne Frontier Days train. In La Salle, UP SD40-2s will be added to assist with the climb up to Speer, WY.

After losing UP 3985 (due to bearing problems), three SD40-2s were added to the Cheyenne Frontier Days train in La Salle, CO to assist the 844 with the climb up Speer Hill. The train is preparing to pass under US-85 just north of Nunn.

UP 844 looks very good on the point of the Frontier Days passenger train as the train crosses from Main 2 to Main 1 just west of the depot in Cheyenne.

Arriving about an hour and a half late, the Cheyenne Frontier Days special back into Union Station to allow its passengers to disembark.

Earlier in the day, UP 3985 (4-6-6-4 steam engine) broke down in Ft Lupton, CO. In La Salle, three SD40-2s were added to the train for the trip to Cheyenne. Once in Cheyenne, Union Pacific added UP 6936, the only remaining active DDA40X, as the diesel help.

After arriving at Union Station in Denver, the power for the Cheyenne Frontier Days special was taken off the train and moved over to station track 3. UP 844 spits steam out along the stop of the unit.
