Now that Amtrak no longer moves freight or mail, the California Zephyr is reliably two engines, a baggage car, and eight Superliners. Amtrak is in the siding because it is meeting an eastbound coal load which is just entering Tolland (on the main) at the time this picture was taken. The sun was far enough around the mountain to the south to illuminate the hill in the distance, but not quite far enough to the west yet to actually light the tracks. Rio Grande's old Provo Yard is reportedly getting a lot of action now. The manifest will go to Provo, and then any cars headed for Roper will be forwarded on the MPVRO (Provo to Roper manifest). UP 6067 leads 13 units (only three of which were online and working) in a light power move between North Yard and Grand Junction. At Bond, this manifest (composed primarily of covered hoppers) will head up the Craig Branch, probably arriving at is destination in Phippsburg sometime tonight well after sunset. The decorating crew, as always, did a wonderful job with the front of Union Station looking down 17th Street in Denver. I particularly like the Christmas Tree of lights on the flag pole in the front. Close to three hours of slow orders in between Reno, NV and Salt Lake City, UT currently cause Number 6 to regularly run anywhere between three and six hours late by the time they reach Denver. Such is the case here with AMTK 25 sitting on a stub track in the foreground, while AMTK 91 leads Number 6 on Track One in the background.
