Fog has settled in at the east end of Leyden amongst fresh fallen snow from the second blizzard (in as many weeks) that hit the day before. The eastbound coal load on the siding has been tied down and won't see a crew until much later in the day.

Running about two hours late, Amtrak 5 rounds the curve just west of Clay on its continued journey west. Note that, directly above the Superliners you can see the trees and the hoppers on the curve at Big Ten Curve.

There's nothing better than snow covered mountains and a crystal clear blue sky. Amtrak 5 is climbing up from the base of Coal Creek Canyon on the approach to Tunnel 1. Although the train is westbound, it is technically headed east (by the compass) at this location.

The tail end of Amtrak is just about to round the curve and disappear into Tunnel 1. Nearly a foot of snow fell the day before in the second of two blizzards which hit the Front Range in a 9-day period!

The westbound California Zephyr charges west through freshly fallen snow at Tolland. Amtrak had a rough start to the day with power problems in Denver delaying it nearly two hours, plus a train stuck in emergency which added another hour onto the delay. It is about 1:15pm as Amtrak is approaching the Moffat Tunnel.

Eight units, including a very new SD70ACe, lead the westbound MNYPV past the signal at the east end of East Portal. The train is running on an approach signal and will stop at the west end of East Portal for about ten minutes to wait for the tunnel to vent from the exhaust of Amtrak which passed by about ten minutes earlier.

UP 8487 leads the westbound MNYPV as it is about to enter the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. The train is passing under a brand new camera tower that has been placed about 100 feet east of the east portal. There are at least five cameras on the new tower pointing in various directions.
