Amtrak 5 is the first of several westbounds in a parade of westbounds coming out of Denver! Rising above most of the Denver-Metro area, Amtrak is just west of Leyden on a temperate September morning. The train is running about 15 minutes late.

Ever since Amtrak stop running express freight, the consist for the California Zephyr is far more predictable. You are almost gauranteed to find two engines, a baggage car, and eight passenger cars (three sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and three coaches). This morning is no exception as Amtrak hustles toward the industry at Chem Spur.

The California Zephyr passes by Blue Mountain on its journey west. In the field (on the right side of the shot), a horse looks up momentarily from breakfast, showing only mild interest in the passenger train.

BNSF 4828 brings up the back end of BNSF's Pueblo to Provo (HPUEPVO) trackage rights train. As is often the case, the train is dominated by tank cars with a just few pieces of general merchandise thrown in.

Formerly known as the American Orient Express (and now the GrandLuxe Rail Express) heads west for the second (of seven) days spent along the rails between Denver and San Francisco. Unlike in 2005 (the last time the train ran west on the Moffat), this year the train is led by three (leased) P42's instead of just two.

Adding a little color to the shot, the GrandLuxe Rail Express passes near Chem Spur. The newest car on the train, the "Great Dome Lounge" is a beautiful addition to the train.

Union Pacific's dispatchers do a nice job keeping the westbound GrandLuxe Rail Express running on clear signals. In the distance (above the front half of the train), you can see a westbound BNSF manifest working its way through Clay. The manifest would ultimately hold in the siding at Plain for the passenger special to pass.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Grand Luxe Express
The GrandLuxe Rail Express offers several different trips around North America throughout the course of the year. One of the trips offered is the "Rockies, Sierra, Napa Valley" tour. The train spends seven days between Denver and San Francisco with passengers enjoying tours of Arches and Canyonlands National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and Lake Tahoe, just to name a few. During the second day of the trip west, the train is passing by Blue Mountain on its journey west.

Above halfway through the siding of Plain (on the main), the daily MNYPV (North Yard to Provo manifest) is working hard with a heavy load and a yellow signal. I always like trying to get the NYPV as it is often led by SD70M's. No such luck on this morning, as the train was led by to AC4400CWs and two SD9043MACs.

At the west end of Plain, the MNYPV leaves the block and prepares to dive into Tunnel Two, the real start of the Tunnel District. The train was moving slowly at this point - not so much due to the grade, but because it was running on yellows following a BNSF manifest.

The mountains right along the Front Range don't have a lot of deciduous trees that can offer good fall colors. However, there are a few hiding amongst the pine trees as seen here at the west switch of Clay. A coal empty with three units (no DPU) hustles west as the last of five westbounds to leave Denver before 11am!
