The daily MPVNY passes the old coal tower at Chemical on its journey east toward town. This was one of the few eastbound trains to come into town this morning due to a derailment on the Belt Main the night before. That derailment prevents coal train from reaching the KP, so they were all being tied down on the hill!

While coal trains on the Moffat all have AC's (be it SD9043MACs, AC4400CWs, etc), UP manifests still offer the best variety when it comes to power. Sometimes, even the manifests get stuck with AC's, but more often then not there is something interesting to see! Such was the case on this morning when the MPVNY was led by an SD60, a C44-9W, and an SD40-2.

With the shortest day of the year rapidly approaching (about 30 days away when this shot was taken), the sun was not far above the horizon at 7:30am! The MPVNY heads almost directly into the rising sun on the approach to Leyden.

There has been a ton of maintenance going on along the Moffat lately. Tie gangs, track gangs, switch gangs and signal gangs all out doing their thing. The Moffat has literally been taken out of service between Leyden and (at least) Cliff all week in between Amtrak's. This work train, with two SD70Ms for power, needed a place to tie up for the night, and the Rocky Spur worked as well as no house track was long enough to accomodate the train.

Even though there is a lot of maintenance going on along the Moffat, the Rocky Local still needs to serve its customers! Here, the train has receive authority to enter the out of service limits (west of Leyden) and proceed west at restricted speed (~10 MPH). Had to move up to a high ISO as there was very little light left in the western sky!

The setting sun ignites the clouds in a pink flame as the last hopper of the Rocky Local passes the [relatively] new signal at MP 14.5. The train is moving west just above walking speed as it is in out of service limits due to maintenance.
