EMD's DDA40X is the longest diesel-electric locomotive on the rails today, coming in at almost 100 feet in length (about 30 meters). Here, the 6,600 horsepower unit leads a 11 car passenger special through the curves at Blue Mountain.

A UP officer special, the SGJSS-14, leaves the mountains behind as it prepares to hit the plains of eastern Colorado. Coal Creek Canyon is visible directly above the train. UP 6936 - the sole operating DDA40X - leads up the 11 car special.

UP 6936 leads an eastbound officer special down the mainline just west of the intermediate signals at Chemical. UP 6936 is the only active DDA40X on the rails. For those not familiar with such a unit, it has two physical prime movers under the hood, each producing 3,300 horsepower. The units were built by EMD as part of the horsepower race in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Each year, Union Pacific runs an officers (mechanical) special so some of the higher-ups can view a lot of the UP system. This years special was led by UP 6936 and had 11 cars in the consist. Passengers in the last car enjoy stadium seating as they look out at the passing track and scenery out the back!
