UP 844 emerges from the west portal of Hermosa on its way west. It is leading a UP passenger special going on a month long tour. Quite a show is put on for spectators as the brakes are released and the train steams up (quite literally) to depart. Note the crowd of people gathered to witness the event. There were a fair number of railfans chasing the train on this day...and not all of them used the best judgment! The diesel on the train is UP 7813. It is an ES44AC delivered to UP a little over a year earlier. It's dynamic brakes are used when proceeding down a grade so the train doesn't have to rely entirely on air brakes.
