Moffat Tunnel (UP) Grand Luxe Express
Coming around Big Ten Loop is a deadhead special! This equipment is from the former Grand Luxe Express (and before that, the American Orient Express). The cars were purchased by Phil Anschutz, who just sold the Ski Train. The reason? Well, that isn't clear just yet...

A pair of fairly clean UP ES44AC's lead up a deadhead special for the former Grand Luxe Express. The two Amtrak P42s had issues in California and needed a little help from UP! The train is running nearly 24 hours behind schedule here as the train wraps through Barbara's Gulch.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Grand Luxe Express
After Colorado Railcar (owner of the Grand Luxe Express) went belly up in 2008, I was skeptical if I'd ever have another chance to get a shot of the Grand Luxe Express cars leaving. Fortunately, on this day, the cars are being sent to Burnham where employees of Phil Anschutz will work to get the cars into good working order.

After waiting here for about an hour, a "pilot" crew has finally showed up to help the crew that brought the train down the Moffat get the train to Burnham. The crew is not familiar with the north end of the Joint Line, so a crew that is familiar had to come and ride with the Moffat crew to get them there safely.

The equipment from the Grand Luxe Express (previously the American Orient Express) heads down Main 2 at Fox Junction, headed for Prospect Junction. The train will wrap around into the BNSF yard and back down Main 1 on the Joint Line to Burnham. The yellow dwarf signal is for a southbound coal load also ready to depart North Yard southbound. The Colorado Rockies play a night game against the San Diego Padres at Coors Field in the distance. It is the first game with probationary coach Jim Tracy after Clint Hurdle was fired earlier in the day. The Rockies won, 3-0.
