This is just about as ideal a Colorado morning as you can get! UP's MRONY has a clear signal as it approaches the west switch of Leyden.

20 years ago, taking a picture from this spot would have yielded a sea of green Burlington Northern units. Makes you wonder what it will look like in another 20 years!

In the last six months, hundreds of SD40-2s (along with other, older power) has been placed in storage on all Class 1 railroads. So it was a treat to find a pair of them working on the Salt Mine switch job.

A trio of C44-9CWs hang out at BNSF's 38th Street Yard on the Ready Track. The units have been fueled and sanded and are ready for assignment.

Just outside of BNSF's 31st Street Yard, an empty unit auto rack train slowly approaches a lunar signal to enter the yard. The train would ultimately head for Rennicks and the Front Range Sub.

This is just about as brand new as you can get! This coal load consisted of unit aluminum hoppers built in April 2009. The hoppers boast a "Rapid Discharge" system. Appears that a single door that spans the base of the hopper opens, allow the coal to be quickly dropped out.

Got caboose? A pair of Department of Defense (DODX) cabeese hang out on a yard track in UP's 36th Street Yard. Exactly where they are going, I do not know!

At Tonville, at eastbound coal empty takes the siding to meet a westbound coal load passing underneath me on the main. It was a well-timed meet and the empty only had to come to a stop briefly.

A telephoto look at a meet between a coal load and empty at the siding of Tonville. The empty on the siding just got a clear signal to head east and is starting to pull again.

Just east of Ft Morgan, an eastbound coal empty approaches the underpass at County Road 12. The train is fairly typical in length on the Brush Sub, running with four units and 120 cars.

The sunflowers are in full bloom in northeast Colorado just outside the town of Merino. Here, a westbound BNSF coal load is running on a track warrant along UP's Julesburg Sub between Sterling and Union. BNSF uses this track almost exclusively (and dispatches it as well), but the track is indeed owned by Union Pacific.

My very first time ever in the town of Sterling, CO. This is a crew change point on BNSF and marks the change from the Angora Sub (to the northeast) and the UP Julesburg Sub (to the southwest). The train seen here has a fresh crew and is preparing to depart for Denver and points beyond. In the distance, the next train is rolling into town.

Idling quietly in the Sterling Yard was this GP40X! This was a real treat as there are only four such units left on BNSF's roster. This was the only 4-axle unit to receive slanted radiators, similar to the SD45. Click the "Hear It!" link below for a brief snippet of sound.

Julesburg (UP) BNSF
There is some fairly scenic spots to be found along the west end of UP's Julesburg Sub between Messex and Union. The tracks follow the South Platte River closely and there is a lot of vegetation in the area. A BNSF coal load passes by the lush plants about a mile away from Union.
