About four miles west of the Altamont tunnels, a doublestack train close to 9000 feet in length heads east on Main 2 in ABS territory. The second unit - an SD70ACe - is putting out quite a bit of exhaust on the trip.

These two SD70's (SD70M on the right and SD70ACe on the left) are actually pushing on this doublestack train...these are the tail-end DPUs for a train that is nearly 9,000 feet long! The train is headed from the ports in Los Angeles to the Global 1 intermodal center in Chicago.

In the middle of the night about 10 hours before this shot was taken, this train was departing the intermodal facility in Denver, CO! This is the daily ZDVSC. The train ran via the Moffat and the desert once upon a time, but was moved to the Overland route sometime around 2002.

Nothing like a full frame, 400mm shot of an ES44AC coming straight at you! A pair of ES44AC's surround an SD70ACe on this huge intermodal train being moved from the west coast to Chicago.

The train on the track on the right side of the shot (Main 2) has a pair of unit pushing on the tail end of a doublestack train while the train on the left side of the shot (Main 1) has a trio of units pulling on a similar train. This is a good comparison shot to see the differences in the noses of an SD70M (left) and an SD70ACe (right).

We don't see too many of these units running out on the mainline these days, particularly on intermodal trains. Regardless, this particular day found this 22 year old C40-8 running as the third of three units.

I was rather surprised to find this nice pair of SD40-2s switch the yard in Green River, WY. UP 3475 is a snoot-nose SD40-2 and UP 9921 is a former MoPac unit with not dynamic brakes.

The mesa's north of Green River, WY have several jeep and hiking trails on them. If you can hike or drive on them, you can get an wonderful overview of Green River. Note the UP yard here in this shot...

You have to hate it when the clouds decide to ruin the "perfect shot" that you saw before the train arrived! However, a little blast of sunlight on the lead units make this a nice black and white shot. Due to maintenance on the Moffat, the California Zephyr is being rerouted through Wyoming. Here, the train is on the approach to Green River, WY. This is about 200 miles north of Green River, UT, the typical stop for the Zephyr!

After a wonderful three day trip to Utah and Wyoming, it was time for the trip to come to a close. A wonderful sunset was a great way to end the day and the trip!
