This is the north end of UP's Boulder Industrial Lead (the Dent Branch). The line used to run all the way into Boulder from the east, but has since been severed. UP is currently using the north end for surplus covered hopper storage. The tracks have been paved over on County Road 6, which I am standing on to get this shot.

In the foreground, the HLAUDEN heads south on the main track while the QDENTAC is coming north on the siding above. The crews of both trains talked to each other to time the meet as well as they could. The QDENTAC is 6,700 feet long and the HLAUDEN is 7,700 feet long. This means car traffic at Nickel Street is going to be blocked for awhile!

I always enjoy shooing meets between trains at Broomfield because the siding and the main are on completely different alignments throughout most of the siding. This is because the tracks used to be two different (main)lines, owned by different railroads. Here, the QDENTAC is on the siding, which is several feet higher than the HLAUDEN on the main.

Under flat, gray skies, this 6,700-foot QDENTAC is rolling north after meeting a train at Broomfield. The crew on the train have received a "Box 13" on their track warrant, indicating that they can leave the north switch of the siding in the reverse position. The next train will receive a "Box 12", instructing them to realign the switch for the main track.
