This shot shows how the lower half of a locomotive is relatively easy to access by virtue of having the locomotive on stilts. Cabinets to the right contain parts needed for the this part of the maintenance cycle.

The east side of the shops have tracks on stilts that are three wide and each track can have four units. So a total of 12 units can be worked on at a time. Here, at the south end of the shop, three units are currently being worked on. UP 6199 (ex-SP 152) is getting its water drained.

An example of an AC4400CW on one of the stilt tracks at Burnham. On these tracks, maintenance can easily be performed on the top half of the unit from the platform above, on the outside of the trucks from the stilts, or underneath the unit as seen on the bottom half of the picture.

This shot looks down along the lower half of the stilt tracks on the east side of the Burnham Shop. You can see the trucks to another unit to the left side of the shot. You can also see the platform above that allows for easy access to the top half of UP 6545.

On the north side of the Burnham Shops, we find this friendly face hanging out waiting for some final servicing! This was DRGW 3100, the very last Rio Grande geep to get a UP patch. That happened just over four years prior to this picture, on January 31, 2006.

Every locomotives that comes out of either Erie, PA (GE) or London, ON (EMD) has a unique serial number stamped somewhere on the frame (called a frame number). This can be useful for railfans because, if a frame number can be found, the original unit to roll out of the factory can then be identified. Here is the frame number on UP 1350 (originally DRGW 3100). The number is 7360-7.

Whoa! Hello 1980's flashback! Two SD60s and two B40-8s sit on a "dead line" on the east side of the Burnham Shops. Once revenue picks back up as the economy (eventually) recovers, these units may be put back into service. Then again, they may be destined for short lines or even scrappers. Time will tell.

As of this photo, this is one of only about two dozen Tunnel Motors that have not yet been retired from UP's roster. Time may be short for this unit, however, as it sits in a deadline at the Burnham Shops in Denver. This unit started life as SP 8259 in May 1980.

Talk about a blast from the past! This was one of the last Rio Grande GP30's to be retired off the roster. This unit almost saw action in the 21st century, being retired on July 23, 1998. It has been sitting here in Burnham ever since, waiting for its new (private) owner to find a permanent home for it. The unit survived for nearly 37 years, seeing its first action in April of 1962.

A former Rio Grande crane sits along with other Maintenance of Way equipment on some storage tracks on the west side of Burnham. All this equipment is now privately owned and is being stored on some tracks leased from Union Pacific.
