This southbound coal train is passing over I-25 just south of the south switch of Bragdon. At this point, the Joint Line has ended and BNSF trains, such as this one, run on the BNSF track from Bragdon to Pueblo.

The interchange at Pueblo Junction tends to be a busy one! At this location, UP trains coming from and going to Denver come through the junction on one track, BNSF trains coming from and going to Denver come through on another, all southbounds leave on a third track, and northbounds arrive on a fourth track. Here, a BNSF southbound is headed for the Pueblo Subdivision to continue on to La Junta. Northbounds arrive from the Spanish Peaks Sub on the track to the right.

After making the trip north from Trinidad (and points south), this northbound has passed by Salt Creek Junction and will soon continue north toward the Joint Line and Denver. It will eventually reach the Black Thunder Mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming.

Most shots from Bragdon show southbounds coming off the double track on Main 1. I wanted to find a new perspective, so I found this shot of a northbound approaching Bragdon on Main 2. The diverging route in the picture is used when BNSF trains coming out of Pueblo need to cross over to Main 2, or on the rare occasion when BNSF trains run the "wrong way" on Main 2 from Crews and have to cross back over to the BNSF main into Pueblo. The train approaching a BNSF coal empty that is running on UP's main.

This northbound coal empty is stopped at Crews to wait for a southbound manifest that is currently at Kelker. I thought it was somewhat interesting that there are only three unique numbers between the two units (9992 and 8888).

After meeting a southbound manifest here at Crews, this northbound has a clear signal and is throttling up to enter the CTC-controlled single track mainline.

It can be hard to get northbounds in good light on the Joint Line, but the tracks sweep to the west, offer a nice opportunity around Kelker for some good light. Case in point is this northbound, running on clear signals on the main at Kelker.

A southbound coal load makes the final effort to get over the top of Palmer Divide, about 7,200 feet above sea level. Here, the double track ends and the single track CTC begins. The single track runs for 32 miles between Palmer Lake and Crews, and there are four sidings along the way to facilitate train meets.

Minutes before the sun ducks behind the mountains west of Palmer Lake, this southbound works through the S-Curve just south of the lake. Leave it to BNSF to run the last unit nose-forward!

This manifest was running right on the yellow blocks of the coal load ahead of it, so I didn't have enough time to get north of Palmer Lake and back into the light (note the house and hillside in the distance). Instead, I settled for this shot at the grade crossing at Palmer Lake. This is BNSF's daily Denver to Pueblo manifest. When I first saw it, I thought it was a baretable train as I only saw the empty well cars initially!
