The interchange at Pueblo Junction tends to be a busy one! At this location, UP trains coming from and going to Denver come through the junction on one track, BNSF trains coming from and going to Denver come through on another, all southbounds leave on a third track, and northbounds arrive on a fourth track. Here, a BNSF southbound is headed for the Pueblo Subdivision to continue on to La Junta. Northbounds arrive from the Spanish Peaks Sub on the track to the right.

The last DPU units on this coal load pass over the Spring Switch at the west end of La Junta. This track is governed by ABS and track warrants, which is why there is only a single head on the signal even though there is a switch.

By dawn's early light, this coal load is just about to leave the Pueblo Subdivision behind as it arrives in La Junta. Here, the train will receive a crew change before continuing on toward Texas.

Many years ago at NA Junction, the ATSF and the Missouri Pacific came together to share the ATSF track into Pueblo. After the MoPac/UP merger, Rio Grande actually gained trackage rights to Kansas City on the MoPac line from NA Junction. After the UP/SP merger, UP sold the line to short line railroads and it is hardly used today. BNSF train, however, use the former ATSF line (now the Pueblo Sub) to make it to La Junta. Here, a coal load leaves CTC behind in favor of TWC for the trip to La Junta.

Once arriving in Pueblo, south coal loads use the Pueblo Subdivision to head south into Texas. Train use the Pueblo Sub to La Juanta and then the Boise City Sub to Dalhart, TX. Northbound empties return from Dalhart on the Twin Peaks Sub and the Spanish Peaks Sub via Trinidad. Here, a coal load is headed southeast on the Pueblo Sub at Baxter.

East of Pueblo, you can find the Transportation Testing Center, which is capable of performing just about any test you can think of on a locomotive. At the entrance to the facility, EMDX 70 - one of the first SD70ACes - sits idling by itself along BNSF's main track. Why it was here, alone? I do not know...

To get from Denver to Kansas City, BNSF run south from Denver to Pueblo, then southeast from Pueblo to La Junta, CO on the Pueblo Subdivision. From there, trains use the La Junta Subdivision to head east into Kansas. Here, the HDENKCK highballs Avondale, along US-50.
