When the mainline through the Rockies is closed to train due to work windows, about the only thing you can hope to see west of Denver is the West Local (formerly the Rocky Local). The train used to run on Tuesday's and Thursday's, but thanks to the downturn in the economy, it now only regularly runs on Wednesday's (although it will run on Saturday's as an extra if business demands it). Here, the local is approaching Simms Street with two GP40-2s and nine covered hoppers from the Rocky Spur.

This GP38 (still in the body of a GP35) was the fourth unit on BNSF's Provo to Denver train. After being dropped off in Denver, the unit would depart the following day on BNSF's Denver to Galesburg, IL manifest. This is a Utah Railway unit that I had always wanted to shoot but never got the chance in Utah. How ironic that I was finally able to capture in right in my own back yard in Denver!
Rumor has it that the unit is off to Panama City, FL where it will be upgraded (rebuilt) as a GP38-3. Utah Railway sister unit UTAH 2000 is apparently there and being rebuilt as of this picture. So it would seem that UTAH 2002 will be returning to Utah Railway, but I guess only time will tell for sure.

BNSF's Buck Local heads south on the BNSF "New North Main" alongside the UP Main. The local has just come down off the Front Range Sub and is headed for the yard. It is going to have to stop for a bit though due to traffic ahead blocking its way. I love that in 2010, you can still find a blue and yellow GP60 and a Heritage GP38-2 working together on a train.
