A southbound manifest passes through the south switch of Greeley. This is an interesting control point in that it is actually a crossover. The siding continues south on the east side of the main to service some industries. Not a bad looking signal bridge.

In the town of Eaton, this southbound is stopped at the Lucerne Hold Signal waiting for a clear signal before continuing so as not to block any grade crossings. The first half the train is auto racks and the second half is good old fashion manifest.

EMD was the king of diesel-electric locomotives until 1987 when GE passed EMD and has pretty well stayed ahead since. Therefore, it is somewhat unusual to find a solid set of EMDs on a train these days. That made this train particularly cool with it's quartet of EMD power.

There's no point in denying it...I'm an EMD brat. Always have been, likely always will be. This, I'm sure, is because I was raised on Rio Grande, which never owned a non-EMD unit in my lifetime. So, seeing a quartet of EMDs leading a southbound just south of Greeley (with two SD40-2s to boot), made me a very happy camper.

After an extraordinarily wet summer in June and July, August has definitely dried out the front range of Colorado and the green fields are starting to fade to their more-common yellow-brownish. Meanwhile, a two-thirds auto train, one-third manifest makes its way south toward Fort Lupton.

On this Saturday afternoon, the Greeley Sub dispatcher was fleeting three southbounds down the line. The first was a manifest, the second was a mixed auto/manifest and the third was this coal empty. The sunflowers are in bloom about three miles south of Platteville!

Upon arriving at Rolla, the crew on this partial auto train worked to spot the auto racks at UP's auto facility. The first two thirds of the train were all auto racks, with the remaining one third consisting of just a mixed manifest. The mixed cars were left tied down on the main while the racks were spotted.
