On a beautiful September 11th, 2011, the westbound California Zephyr is running right on time as it approaches the east switch of Rocky. Due to flooding in the mid-west, the Zephyr is currently only running between Denver and Emeryville, CO.

After meeting the Zephyr at Rocky, the MRONY has a clear signal to head east in to Denver. From the looks of it, the lead unit has spent quite a bit of time traversing the Moffat...I wonder what "KNC" might be a reference to?

Can you identify this spot along the Moffat? If you said the 66th Avenue grade crossing in Arvada, you'd be correct! The MNYGJ is charging west as a trio of birds circles in the air in the distance.

After receiving a 90-day inspection at Burnham, UP 1364 is being shipped west to Grand Junction for yard and local work. This seems rather fitting, considering that until 2006, this was actually DRGW 3109! It was patched in 2006 and subsequently painted in early 2007. At that time, it made a trip to North Little Rock, AR. In addition to a fresh coat of paint, the GP40-2 had its MARS light removed and air conditioning added.

This is a spot that I've wanted to shoot for awhile. It would have worked better if it was an hour or so later (as the cars on the train would have been lit). However, the spot at 66th Avenue in Arvada still looked quite nice!

Got maintenance? A Loram ballast machine is doing some ballast work along the outside of the rails on the siding at Leyden. The Loram crew had hoped to be working on the main east of Leyden, but, as you can see, the dispatcher had trains to run! So, the crew took advantage off the non-mainline time and did some work on the siding. The crew was explicitly told not to work on the south side of the tracks (the inside of the curve) due to the trains coming through on the main. Always, safety first!

Interesting to note that the second-to-last unit in the consist is an SD9043MAC. It is pretty rare to find those in coal service these days as UP decided in 2009 to remove them from said service. How things have changed. The Moffat has gone from an EMD-only club to almost exclusively GE!

The climb from the base of Coal Creek Canyon up to Tunnel One is a great one that I've always enjoyed observing. This picture and the next two are a sequence showing a coal empty making the ascent to the tunnel and the Plainview where they will take the siding for a meet.

After disappearing behind the rocks on the curve to the right, the lead power on this Somerset-bound coal empty reappears about two thirds of the way up from Coal Creek.

The rocks above Tunnel One are always an inviting place to hang out and watch westbounds! Such is the case here as this coal empty...with a LOT of power...climbs toward the east portal of Tunnel One. Only the first three units are actually online, however. The other five units are offline and will be set out in the yard at Glenwood Springs to serve as swing power for eastbound loads coming out of Grand Junction.

One other thing that I like about this picture. Through pure coincidence, the ID of this picture is 103911, marking the 3,911th picture added to my site. I find it happy that this picture should be added on the 10th Anniversary of September 11th.

Approaching the west switch at Leyden, this coal empty is making track speed at 35 MPH with its three units (the third being on the rear). This shot is relatively close to the location of the old west end of Leyden. It used to be a fairly short siding (under 5,000 feet) with the west end lining up with the cottonwood trees to the right. It was extended to its current 7,100 feet by Rio Grande in the early 1980's.

A single C44AC-CTE brings up the tail end of this coal empty which is headed for the North Fork branch out of Grand Junction. The colorful (fully flagged and winged) unit is the perfect way to wrap up a nice bit of shooting on the 10th Anniversary of September 11th.
