Ten years ago, you would have seen the east switch of Yarmony in this picture. However, when UP extended Yarmony several thousand feet to the west, they also moved the east switch west. This took the switch off the S-Curve seen here, and prevented the siding from crossing a road, allowing trains to stop on the siding without blocking the road.

This eastbound manifest heading from Roper to North Yard emerges from Tunnel 40 in Little Gore Canyon. The seven units on the point include six AC4400CW's and a single SD9043MAC.

The westbound MNYGJ (Manifest, North Yard to Grand Junction) is slowing as it approaches the east switch of Kremmling. Maintenance has some time in Gore Canyon to check out some slide fences. So, the train will have to sit patiently at a double red signal until maintenance can clear up.

It was nice to find this little gem on the westbound MNYGJ! The GP30 and the GP60 are my two favorite geeps. I really like the square dynamic brake intakes on the GP60. This particular GP60 was SP 9729 until June 22nd, 1998 when it became UP 5828. It held that number until July 3, 2001 when it moved to UP 2028.

At the east switch of Troublesome, a track maintainer sits on the siding and gives a "roll by" to this MRONY. The maintainer will look sticking brakes, anything hanging off the train, or just anything that could pose a problem or safety risk. On this day, the roll by looks good and the train continues east.

Between Gore and Byers Canyons, trains can actually reach speeds of 60 MPH. This manifest is making good time in Parshall, CO, but will be slowing down shortly to 20 MPH in preparation of entering Byers Canyon.

The MRONY is nearing the east end of Byers Canyon as the tracks get closer to the level of the Colorado River. The lead unit on the manifest, UP 6350, was SP 338 prior to the UP/SP merger.

US-40 crosses over the tracks just east of Sulphur. This overpass is a great place to observe eastbounds as they charge up the 0.75% grade.

This is a place I've wanted to shoot an eastbound from for quite some time. While I'm pleased with the outcome, I would now really like to shoot here in the morning when the fall colors are at their peak. This is about four miles west of Granby.

These passengers on the platform at Granby were expecting Amtrak when they saw the headlight in the distance. And, if Amtrak had been on time, it should have been the Zephyr's headlight. However, the Zephyr is running about two hours late as the MRONY heads east past the depot.
