As is often the case, the area along the front range of the Rockies in Colorado has been getting more snow after the new year than before. March is, in fact, the snowiest month in Colorado. Plenty of the white stuff remains from the blizzard two days earlier as the westbound Zephyr approaches the east switch of Leyden.

With the Denver skyline standing tall in the distance, the on-time westbound Zephyr passes by the east end of Leyden on a clear signal. On this particular morning, the Zephyr had a trio of P42DCs leading the train out of town.

While it is fairly common for UP's MNYRO to depart west just ahead of or just behind the Zephyr (assuming the Zephyr is running on time), it is a bit of a bonus to have an additional train. This coal empty came from Xcel Energy's Cherokee Power Plant in Denver and is headed for the loadout at Energy on the Craig Branch.

While I have heard that UP has been running more SD70ACes on coal trains, this is the first time I have actually seen it. A very shiny (compared to the rest of the power) SD70ACe leads up this coal empty at Leyden. The train is headed for the Energy mine on the Craig Branch.

A trio of elephant-style GEs and a couple dozen empty hoppers lead up the MNYRO on this morning. More than likely, the empty hoppers will be setup in Grand Junction and loaded on the North Fork Branch.

Once numbering 279, at the time of this photo there were only 11 unpatched Espee AC4400CWs left. I suppose that, considering it has been close to 17 years since the UP/SP merger, 11 units isn't that bad! In any case, SP 343 was the third of three units on the head end of the MNYRO on this chilly morning.

Every Rio Grande signal between C&S Junction and the Moffat Tunnel has now been replaced with new signals, with one notable exception. The classic Grande signals still stand at east Leyden. Based on this picture, it is not hard to understand why replacing the signals is necessary. This signal is in fact displaying a red over yellow (Diverging Approach) indication as the approaching MNYRO is taking the siding.
