The eastbound California Zephyr is rolling on clear signals about two miles east of Dotsero. The train is running on time as it heads down the Dotsero Cutoff toward Bond. Amtrak is taking advantage of the slow season (ridership is generally down in winter months) and is reducing long distanced trains to just six Superliners. This is allowing them to refurbish some of the cars. Interestingly, while they are doing this, the Lounge Car is being placed directly behind the baggage car. Generally, it is in the middle of the train next to the Dining Car.

The westbound California Zephyr had some issues between Denver and Winter Park. It was necessary to borrow a UP SD70M from a manifest. Now, running a little over 90 minutes late, the train is arriving at the depot in Glenwood Springs.

Running close to two hours late, the California Zephyr makes its daily stop in Glenwood Springs. A lot of people ride the train between Denver and Glenwood Springs, so it is not surprising to see quite a few people detraining here at the Glenwood Springs Depot.

While making its station stop in Glenwood Springs, the crew popped out of the (borrowed) SD70M on the point for a few minutes. The SD70M was picked up after one of the P42DCs developed an issue after leaving Denver.

After making its station stop in Glenwood Springs, the westbound Zephyr is back on the roll at Glenwood. Glenwood Springs actually has two sidings...the east siding and the west siding. The Zephyr is crossing over from the east siding (on the right) to the main (center track).

Making track speed (70 MPH), the westbound Zephyr just hit the detector at MP 375.4 between Newcastle and Silt. An SD70M has been borrowed from UP due to some mechanical issues with one of the P42DCs.

In between Rifle and Lacy, the tracks cross underneath I-70. The overpass is not a bad spot to grab a shot of a train! Here, a late-running California Zephyr (with an SD70M helping on the point) approaches. Note the Lounge Car first up after the baggage car. A part of an interesting configuration while the Zephyr is running with only six Superliners.

A borrowed UP SD70M has a late-running westbound California Zephyr on the roll at Una, located in between Grand Valley (Parachute) and De Beque.

An SD70M makes for an interesting (and somewhat rare) visitor on the point of the westbound California Zephyr. With some snow-powdered mountains in the distance, the train is rounding the curve just east of De Beque. You can see a few vehicles on I-70 in the distance.

If the westbound Zephyr has managed to show up here at the east switch of Palisade about 10 minutes earlier, the entire train (down to the rails) would have been bathed in glorious sunlight. Unfortunately, it is just late enough that the sun has started to dip behind the western horizon.

The last bit of sunlight glistens off the side of the westbound California Zephyr at Palisade, about 14 miles east of Grand JUnction. This shot seemed like the perfect one to end the day.
