This shot gives a top-down comparison between a Tier-3 ES44AC (on the right) and a Tier-4 ET44AH (on the left). The slope of the radiator housing on the ET44AH (from the outside to the middle) is noticeably greater than the ES44AC.

An ES44AC leads this coal train (on the right) and second up (on the left) is an ET44AH. I always think it is interesting to have a great compare and contrast shot between two models. In this case, of course, it is a straight-down comparison.

At the north switch of Highland, BNSF's Denver-Laurel manifest drops a few cars off at the north end of Highland. These cars will be picked up later on by the Longmont Switch, a local train that runs out of Longmont.

The conductor on the Denver-Laurel is on the ground and has just thrown the switch at North Highland to align for the main. The power will make a reverse move to back on to the train after dropping off a few cars in the siding at Highland.

A southbound "blade train", loaded with wind generator blades, sits on the main at Longs Peak with a single unit on the point. The train is waiting for the Denver-Laurel manifest to get in to the siding. Once that happens, the blade train can get a warrant south.

As a wind train sits on the main at Longs Peak, you can see that the south siding switch has been "bent" (aligned) for the siding. The Denver-Laurel will be coming up and entering the siding in just a few minutes.

The northbound Denver-Laurel, with a BNSF "sticker unit" - the nickname given to the 25th Anniversary units BNSF has released that have stickers of logos of previous railroads - rolls in to the siding at the south end of Longs Peak to meet a southbound wind (blade) train.

Have you ever wondered just how long one of those blades in a power-generating wind mill? Turns out, one blade is nearly as long as three GE units! The Denver-Laurel moves north (right-to-left) while a wind blade train waits to proceed south (left-to-right).

One of the more interesting places to check out trains along the Front Range, in my opinion, is in Longmont on Atwood Street. BNSF's Front Range Sub runs right down the middle of the street! This is a residential street that is lined with houses and a park. Several times a day, the silence in the neighborhood is shattered by the sound of a train, such as this one, running down the middle of the street.

An ES44C4 leads a wind blade train south down the middle of Atwood Street in Longmont. Cars line either side of the tracks as Atwood Street is a one way on either side of the rails here.

The sun moves to the western sky as a southbound BNSF wind blade train makes its way in to Boulder. The train is configured 1x1, meaning there is a single unit on the head end and, as seen here, a single DPU bringing up the rear of the train. As the work day comes to an end, traffic on the Diagonal Highway is starting to pick up. This highway connects the cities of Boulder and Longmont and sees a lot of traffic over the course of a day. The flatirons of the Rockies stand tall in the distance under summer clouds.
