After the end of coal being loaded at the Wildcat loadout on the Utah Railway, the area was repurposed and is now an oil transload facility. However, the Utah Railway now leases their yard at Martin and the main to Wildcat to UP, who facilities the oil train traffic. Here, a westbound UP oil train is loaded and waiting for a helper crew before taking joining the main at URL (Utah Railway Junction).

Following not too terribly far behind a westbound UP coal load was this BNSF coal load. This train loaded in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and is headed for the Valmy power station in Nevada. The train came over the Moffat the previous day. Since BNSF does not have a presence in Helper, the train already has six units (3x3) to make it over Soldier Summit.

A trio of BNSF SD70ACes leads BNSF's Valmy coal load west on Main 1 at Kyune. The train is headed for the Valmy power station in Nevada. That power station has plans to move to natural gas by the end of 2025, so these coal trains are likely in very short supply.

Three GEs bring up the tail end of BNSF's Valmy coal load at the west switch of Kyune. These units are DPU'd and are not manned. They have been with the train since it departed Denver.

At the west end of Soldier Summit, you can clearly see the grade quickly dropping off to start the descent. A BNSF coal train slows as it begins that descent on Main 1. A yellow (Approach) signal on Main 2 indicates that an eastbound is coming. Considering it is only an approach, more than likely the train is still a ways off.

DPUs on the end of this coal load roll west on Main 1 at Soldier Summit. Main 2 is two the left of the train, and the siding of Soldier Summit (and two yard tracks) are tot he right.

From Soldier Summit to the middle of Gilluly, it's about five miles on US-6. The tracks, however, have to take a far less direct route, The rails follow some very clever engineering of loops to decrease the grade of the track, and it is roughly nine rail miles from Soldier Summit to the middle of Gilluly. Here, BNSF's Valmy coal load is descending the grade on Main 1. Far down below, above the power, you can see the bridge where US-6 crosses the track in the middle of Gilluly.

The engineering behind the loops around Gilluly are as amazing, if not more amazing, than Big Ten Curve in Colorado on the Moffat. Similar to Big Ten, there are spots near Gilluly where you can see both the head end and tail end of the same train in the frame. Such is the case here, as you can see the three units on the head end and tail end of the coal load.

BNSF 9217 is now in full dynamics, descending on Main 1 toward the east end of Gilluly. Similarly to Big Ten Curve in Colorado, the loops around Gilluly mean that, at some point, any train is going to be in fantastic light, even if for a short period of time.

BNSF's Valmy coal load heads away from the camera on Main 1 at Gilluly. Not surprisingly, the siding at Gilluly looks pretty rusty and the ties look a bit worn. It is probably pretty infrequently that the siding is actually used these days.

As I was chasing a BNSF coal load west, I noticed intermediate signals on Main 2 were green behind me, indicating a westbound was likely on the move. I found it, a westbound UP coal empty, just east of the crossover at Narrows. Turns out this coal empty is headed for the Skyline Mine on the Pleasant Valley Subdivision.

As the morning turned to afternoon, a few more clouds started to appear and as a result, I had to start playing dodge cloud a bit more often! Here, the two units leading an Intermountain Power coal empty pass by in the sunlight on Main 2 at Gilluly.

The eastbound grade here at Gilluly is close to 2%. Fortunately, this coal train is empty, so the four units (setup 2x2) are having no problem making the climb.
