I am a huge fan of the Utah Desert as I love the barren mounds of dirt which create a very interesting landscape. Hopefully, the UP managers (including "C-Level" managers such as CEO Jim Vena) and their families are enjoying the views as they roll west, climbing Thompson Hill.

The appropriate names Thompson Curve near the apex of Thompson Hill is likely the most recognizable location of pictures in the Utah desert on the Green River Subdivision. Here, a UP passenger special is climbing through that famous S-Curve.

This S-Curve (known as Thompson Curve) offers up just about everything you could ask for here in the Utah desert. In addition to the wonderful geography of the curve itself, you get a bit of desert vegetation (what little there is), dirt mounds, and the hard rock fast of the Book Cliffs in the distance. This UP passenger special is carrying UP's upper management (and their families) on a trip from Rifle, CO to Potash, UT at the south end of the Cane Creek Subdivision.

UP 5898 and this passenger special have left the high speed mainline of the Green River Subdivision behind and the train is now heading south on the 25 MPH Cane Creek Subdivision. The subdivision runs almost 40 miles south toward Moab, UT, actually ending southwest of Moab at Potash, UT.

After emerging from Moab Tunnel, this UP passenger special is slowly rolling through Bootlegger Canyon. High above the train, we can see the famous Corona Arch on the left side of the frame. One of the countless natural arch formations that can be found in and around Arches National Park. Corona Arch itself is actually location outside of the park.

UP 5898 and train are slowing here in Bootlegger Canyon, looking for a nice place to stop for an official corporate photo op! It is a great place to set up for one, with Corona Arch clearly visible in the top-left quadrant of the shot.

UP 5898 and passenger special has come to a stop here in Bootlegger Canyon to set up for an official corporate photo op. The Cane Creek Subdivision was built between August 1961 and the end of 1962 by the Denver and Rio Grande Western. While no (public) passenger train ever traveled on the branch under Rio Grande, I am not sure if the railroad ever ran an officer's special train down the branch. It is certainly possible that this is the first time in history that a passenger train has run through Bootlegger Canyon!

After stopping for an official photo op, UP 5898 and special continue rolling south at the south end of Bootlegger Canyon. This is quite possibly my favorite shot of the day. Crystal clear blue sky, fantastic lighting, the red rock of the canyon, and some nice, lush green included at the bottom of the canyon.

Just beyond the cut at the south end Bootlegger Canyon this UP passenger special continues south toward Potash. The train has roughly seven miles left on its journey. If you look closely, you can see a nice photo line of railfans set up at the south end of the cut on the right side of the picture. They are standing on the Corona Arch Trailhead, which happens to cross the tracks!

The final few miles of the Cane Creek Subdivision follow along Potash Road, current still quite a little ways below the tracks, both following the winding Colorado River. The rock formations you can see if you are lucky enough to be on this passenger special are simply amazing.

UP cleaned every nook and cranny on UP 5898, which is wearing UP's new official paint scheme, for it to lead this passenger special which includes "C-Level" managers from Union Pacific. As you can see, the new paint scheme has removed the wings from the nose, and moved the American flag from the long hood to the nose. While I do not know the reasons for the changes, I would speculate that this new scheme is a little less expensive, with a smaller American flag and no wings on the nose to contend with.
