On the main at Oakley, UP 4014 continues west at track speed. Oakley has a population of 2,046 (as of the 2020 census), and is the location where I-70 heads north, breaking away from the tracks. The rest of the way to Sharon Springs, traffic will be on US-40.

The Union Pacific depot in Oakley might be one of the ugliest depots (in my opinion) that I've ever seen! It looks kind of like a large cinder brick! UP 4014 and the 250th special roll by on the way west toward Sharon Springs.

UP 4014 crosses over a culvert that had a bunch of cows seeking shelter from the 105ºF heat. However, the thundering sound of the Big Boy special has spooked the cows, and they are stampeding away from their shelter!

As always, a long line of cars has formed on US-40, following the Big Boy on its journey west. Just ahead is the tiny town of Page City, KS.

US-40 follows the tracks pretty closely for the most part between Oakley, KS and Sharon Springs, KS. However, there is a couple mile stretch where the track are about a mile north of the highway. Flying in with the drone offered this nice shot.

Between Winona and McAllister, UP 4014 and train cross a few irrigation streams in a very scenic part of the Kansas country side. Kansas is, generally, pretty flat (of course), but there certainly are areas that bring out the beauty of the plains.

About 10 miles east of Sharon Springs, UP 4014 and train cross a wooden trestle. Upon reaching Sharon Springs, the Big Boy will cool down for the night.

A westbound UP local, led (ironically) by UP 4015. The SD70M (and sister SD70M UP 4255) will be taking a single covered hopper east to Oakley after meeting UP 4014. You might recall that, for a few years, UP 4015 was frequently the SD70M that ran with UP 4014. However, this is not that same unit. UP 4015 was repainted into the Abraham Lincoln unit (UP 1616). UP 4392 was subsequently repainted as UP 4015, seen here.

Sharon Springs, KS is a crew change point on Union Pacific. It is an away terminal for Denver crews (from the west) and Salina crews (from the east). UP 4014 is on the "North Pass" track at Sharon Springs. Big Boy will tie down for the night on the North Pass, a bit further to the west.

UP 4014, slowing on the North Pass at Sharon Springs, KS, passes by some hay bales and what might be an old watering or fuel canister. A nice, mid-west plains scene.

The final shot of the day of UP 4014 for me as the train is slowing down on the North Pass track here at Sharon Springs, KS. Just ahead, the train will power down, and the crew will have a few hours this afternoon and evening to reset before the next leg of the trip tomorrow.

A quick shot of UP 1776, helping out UP 4014 on the eastern 250th Anniversary tour of the UP Big Boy. The train went as far east as Philadelphia (on Norfolk Southern rails) as part of the journey.

Unfortunately, UP 4255 did fall victim to a little bit of "tagging" graffiti at some point. My guess would be that it was placed in "long term" storage at some point. However, this afternoon, it is paired with UP 4015 and headed east to Oakley, KS.
