UP 7771 and UP 5701 leads an eastbound coal load by a field of growing corn. In a month or two, the corn will likely be ready for harvest. In the meantime, the green crops backs for a great background!

Just west of the siding of McAllister, UP 7771 crosses over Turkey Creek on a concrete trestle that is relatively new, built in 2002. On April 12, 2002, an eastbound coal train tripped a hotbox detector. Following regulations, the crew stopped the train to walk the train an examine it for a hotbox. Unknown to the crew, the car with the hotbox stopped on the wooden trestle that was located here, over Turkey Creek. The hotbox caused the trestle to catch fire and burn down! The train was still on the bridge, and multiple hoppers fell with the collapsed bridge.

UP has a slow order across this bridge just east of Wallace. The train is moving at 20 MPH under partly cloudy skies. The skies are mostly cloudy to the east, blocking out the sun for this shot.

This trip to go after UP 4014 in Kansas was really my first time chasing in Kansas. In several locations, I noticed these interesting derails that include a derail sign that is over the rails when the derail is set. Not a bad idea as it clearly makes the fact the derail is aligned against the train. An eastbound UP coal train has slowed to a stop on the main. A new crew will take the train east to Salina, KS.

UP 7771 has slowed to a stop on the main track at the east end of Sharon Springs. You might note that there are two SD70Ms trailing behind the other two lead units. The SD70Ms will be set out on the South Pass Track, likely for use on a local out of Sharon Springs.

Sharon Springs, KS is the away terminal for UP crews coming west from Denver as well as east from Salina. The town of 751 people is also the home of the Wildcats (the local high school). This morning, just after sunrise, an eastbound coal load is pulling in to town. The 105-car train loaded at the West Elk Mine in Western Colorado.

On a beautiful Monday morning, the sun is just over the horizon, creating a beautiful sunrise as UP 4014 and train sit on the North Pass here at Sharon Springs. The UP steam crew is just showing up, getting ready to warm up the Big Boy for departure in just over three hours.

About 20 minutes before the sun crests the horizon, UP 4014 sits quietly on the North Pass track in Sharon Springs, KS. In a little under four hours, the train will be steamed up and ready to head to Denver. But for now, it sits in the relatively cool morning air.

A UP local crosses one of numerous bridges between Sharon Springs and Oakley on its way east. These (currently dried up streams) are feeders to the Smoky Hill River, and make for a nice break in the flatlands of Kansas.

I caught UP 4015 in North Yard a few months. At that time, I was not sure where it would be headed. Turns out it came out to the plains and has been working locals between Salina and Sharon Springs. Here, such a local is headed east at Winona toward Oakley.

Unfortunately, UP 4255 did fall victim to a little bit of "tagging" graffiti at some point. My guess would be that it was placed in "long term" storage at some point. However, this afternoon, it is paired with UP 4015 and headed east to Oakley, KS.
