A couple of track maintainers are prepping a track regulator in the house track at Rocky, getting ready to do some work today. Meanwhile, the last train for the next several hours, BNSF's Provo-Denver, rolls by eastbound on the main track.

One of those times when the shot worked out just perfect! As the head end of the Provo-Denver approaches the west switch of Rocky, a pair of DPUs are coming around the east edge of Big Ten Loop on the tail end of the train.

A pair of ES44ACs bring up the end of the eastbound Provo-Denver around the east edge of the Big Ten Loop. The train is relatively short with 63 cars, but BNSF has three units on the point and two points on the rear.

Along the south edge of Big Ten Loop, this eastbound BNSF manifest is continuing east toward Denver. At the moment, it is running a bit below track speed. UP has some slow orders out due to some track work they have been doing in the area.

An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver manifest, whose crew is running short on time, met the Zephyr up at Plain. DS-378 had a great meet setup, and neither train had to come to a stop. Here, the manifest is coming through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain Drive, with a typical three units on the head end.

A former Santa Fe C44-9W leads BNSF's Provo-Denver. The unit has been rebuilt into a C44ACM (or, as BNSF designates it, an AC44CM). There is a push by both UP and BNSF to convert older DC units into AC units. The train is tied down on Main 2 between Tennyson Street and Arvada.

Unfortunately, the westbound Zephyr developed some mechanical issues after departing Chicago. It quickly fell to being four hours late not far west of Chicago. By the time it made it Denver, it was nearly seven hours late! Here, at 4:15pm, the train is finally heading west on Main 1 between C&S Junction and Arvada. An Amtrak P42DC was part of the problem, and had to be removed in favor of this BNSF ES44DC. Not too often the lighting is so good for the westbound Zephyr.

This special high/wide movement is utilizing a 20-axle "schnabel car" to transport what I presume is some sort of generator. Basing that on the "GE Vernova" on the side of the tarp protecting the heavy load.

This northbound special is currently stopped on the south side of Longmont. A local had a warrant on the track ahead, but just cleared it up. That allowed the special here to get a new warrant to proceed from the current location up to Loveland, where the train will be turned over to the Great Western Railway.

BNSF is transporting a large load on a schnabel car. It will be delivered to the Great Western Railway in Loveland for final delivery. Here, the train heads north on the Front Range Sub as it passes through Niwot, northeast of Boulder.

There currently is not a lot of snow falling here at Granby, but the train is moving quick enough that it is kicking up a lot of fresh powder along the right-of-way. A pretty cool effect along the length of the empty unit oil train.

A green signal at the west end of Granby lets the crew on this BNSF oil train know that they are clear to leave the siding and re-enter the single track main west of Granby. It is a very cold (roughly 12°F) morning with a lot of snow being kicked up.

At the time of this photo, there is a lot of question marks about the future of Norfolk Southern (and, technically, Union Pacific). The two railroads are attempting to merge, creating the first true transcontinental railroad. The Surface Transportation Board rejected the original filing, citing missing information. They did not reject/decline the merger, just the application. A new application is supposed to be submitted in the next few months, and the STB is expected to yield a decision sometime in 2027. Meanwhile, the two railroads continue to operate as separate entities. Here, an NS SD70ACe is putting in some power sharing miles on a BNSF oil train.

BNSF pretty consistently runs oil trains west on the Moffat with six units on the point. This way, the same six units, split up in a 3x3 configuration, can bring the train back east. 3-4 inches of fresh snow fell during a blizzard overnight. In fact, it continues to lightly fall this morning.

What a difference 24 hours makes! The previous day, there was hard any snow on the ground here in the Colorado high country. But this morning, snow is finally falling. A westbound BNSF oil train is, for some reason, being run through the siding at Granby. It is not meeting anything. DS-378 just ran it in and out of the siding. Meanwhile, a beautiful new platform sits at Granby, ready for the Zephyr. The platform is heated to make it safer, although it appears a couple of heating element panels are not currently working.
