An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver is getting tied down and the crew will wait for a van to pick them up and take them to their hotel in Denver. In the distance up at Eisele (Clay), the westbound counterpart, the Denver-Provo, is on the main, a pair of SD70ACes bringing up the rear of the train.

We are a month away from the official start of fall, and the greens in the grass are definitely fading here in the latter part of August. It is still a very hot 90°F just a few minute before 11am. A pair of SD70ACes are the DPUs on this westbound Denver-Provo manifest, making its way from Big Ten Curve to Eisele (Clay).

A pair of SD70ACes bring up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest around Big Ten Curve. Meanwhile, across the valley, BNSF's Provo-Denver sits on the siding at Rocky, the crew working to secure and tie the train down.

SD70MACs are increasingly rare as we continue moving forward in the 21st century. BNSF has hundreds in long term storage in various spots on their system. The ones still active are generally seen on coal trains, but catching one on the Moffat on the Denver-Provo was a nice find this August morning.

While meeting its counterpart at Rocky, the crew on this westbound Denver-Provo and the crew on the Provo-Denver were venting some frustrations. Specifically, the crew on the Provo-Denver was unhappy about making it all the way to Rocky, only to have to tie the train down and not make it all the way into the yard. The crew on the westbound here was sympathetic, although they had no specific gripes. Perhaps because they are headed home to Grand Junction.

The first of two BNSF SD70ACes on the tail end of a westbound manifest crosses over Indiana Street. The bridge, amazingly, is still lettered for Rio Grande, 36 years after the end of Rio Grande. There is a second SD70ACe, but it was facing into the train. I figured I'd cut it out of the frame as the unit facing away from the train looks a bit better.

A westbound Denver-Provo departs the siding at Leyden after meeting an oil train. The train is crossing the bridge at MP 13.35, the bridge over Indiana Street. Eventually, this bridge will likely be rebuilt to accommodate the widening of Indiana Street from two lanes to (at least) four.

BNSF's Denver-Provo is pulling into the siding at Leyden. It won't have to wait too long for an eastbound oil train that will meet it on the main, continuing in to Denver.

Two older C44-9Ws serve as DPUs on the tail end of this westbound HDENPVO (high priority manifest from Denver, CO to Provo, UT). The paint is a bit charred on the long hood of BNSF 5265, still sporting the Heritage 2 scheme. Downtown Denver is now being cast in some direct sunlight amid some afternoon thunderstorms roaming the area.

BNSF's Denver-Provo has the typical 3x2 units for power, but the specific units are anything but typical! Only one of the five units has the New Image scheme. The end DPUs sport the original Heritage and Heritage 2 schemes. A KCS de Mexico (in gray) and KCS Retro-Belle are on the point, approaching the east end of Eisele (Clay).

An interesting trio of GEs lead BNSF's westbound Denver to Provo manifest on the south edge of Big Ten Curve this evening, as there is some nice storm light to the southeast out toward downtown Denver. BNSF 6314, an ES44C4, leads a KCS de Mexico (in gray, no less) AC4400CW, and a KCS ES44AC on the train.

BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest typically has more tank cars than anything else, and this evening's train is no exception. The train is climbing out of Rocky, along the north edge of Big Ten Curve in some wonderful evening sunlight. A BNSF ES44C4 and two KCS units, elephant-style, are the power today.

A lot of the storm clouds have, at least temporarily, cleared out and the sun is shining near West Rocky as BNSF's Denver-Provo makes its way west. The train was projected to be called at 10am, but it ended up taking quite a bit longer before it was actually called. There is some colorful power on the headend of the train this evening.

There is a break in the afternoon storms and, indeed, a break in the clouds downtown is allowing some direct sunlight on the skyline as a BNSF manifest heads west out of Leyden, starting the journey to Provo, UT.
