After waiting for a couple of years, I was finally able to see AMTK 42 in person. This P42DC was painted as a tribute to veterans of the United States armed forces. Pretty sharp looking scheme, don't you think?

The westbound California Zephyr...with some extra power...is backing down toward Track 4 at Union Station. The two tracks in the foreground are the track for the Gold Line commuter rail, set to open in 2016. AMTK 42 wears a special scheme, painted in honor of all the veterans that have served in the United States armed forces.

Baggage car in the middle of the Zephyr? Actually, all the cars behind the baggage car (leading away from the camera) and the baggage car itself make up the Zephyr. The cars ahead of the baggage car (including the one just coming in to view) make up the equipment that will be used for the special run of the Ski Train. That's right! Amtrak will run its own version of the Ski Train for two days to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Winter Park!

Here is a view that has changed dramatically in the last five years! This shot is taken standing on the 17th street pavilion looking back toward Union Station. The structure at the bottom of the image are skylights for the underground tunnel connecting Union Station with the Light Rail Station behind me. The building to the right is also very new. Soon, there will be a similar building on the left.

The last few times that I visited the new Train Hall at Union Station, the upper walkway (running over the tracks) was still blocked off and unavailable. Finally, on this temperate January evening, it was open and I was able to get an elevated view of the station as well as Tracks 4 and 5 in the middle of Train Hall. Although it is fairly quiet here right now, that will no doubt change once commuter rail finally launches here in 2016.

The eastbound California Zephyr has nearly completed its station stop in Denver and, in three minutes, it will be ready to depart from Track 4 exactly on time at 7:10pm. A few Amtrak employees scurry around on the platform next to the Zephyr, making final departure preparations.

It is somewhat unfortunate that the city planners in Denver 20 years ago did not anticipate the continued need to run rails south out of Union Station. With buildings, roads, and bridges now blocking any possible access to Union Station from the south, all eight tracks will come to a definite stop at Union Station. Here, you can see the ends of Tracks 5 (on the left) and 4 (on the right). These tracks will be used for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak and, in theory, Cheyenne Frontier Days.

Union Sation: Travel by ???

It appears that RTD needs to get some new neon for the classic Union Station sign behind the station. In addition to the the "T" and "Train" missing, the "I" in "Union" is also flickering, on its way out. With all the time and money that has been spent on the new Train Hall, it sure would be nice to see the sign fixed and shining bright (in its entirety) once again.

For all intents and purposes, construction on (and at) the newly revamped Denver Union Station is complete. There is a little more work to do once commuter rail is ready to actually commence. You can see the tail end of Track 8 on the left as well as Tracks 4 and 5 over to the right (the latter two used for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak).

I really like this particular shot as I feel that there is a lot of great stuff captured in it. First off, of course, is the fact that Amtrak is still running (for the time being) in 2014! Coors Field, a year away from its 20th birthday, stands on the left side of the shot. 20th Street, which use to leave Denver on a raised viaduct, now descends underneath the tracks. And, of course, there is Denver's skyline in the background!

Transportation explosion! While it make not be passenger trains in the traditional sense, commuter trains will be coming to Union Station in 2016. The two tracks on the left side of this shot will be for the commuter rail that will run 23 miles east to Denver International Airport. The two tracks on the right side of the shot will run just over 11 miles northwest to Arvada and Wheat Ridge. The two tracks in the middle are for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak.

A good elevated look at the new Train Hall at Union Station, as well as a lot of the recent Urban development surrounding the station. A four hour late California Zephyr is pulling out of the station on Track 4, ready to head west. Note the private car parked at the tail end of Track 5 to the right of the Zephyr.

Here is a shot that is drastically different from what you would have seen a few years earlier! Take a peek at the ninth picture that I added to my website, taken from close to the same perspective back in April 2002!

After finishing up our pictures on the platform, my daughter Bella and I hop in the elevator to descend down to the bus platform and head back to the car, parked on Wewatta Street. The Zephyr has not yet gotten clearance to depart from BNSF's 31st Street Yardmaster.

Amtrak's on train conductor walks the platform toward the rear of the train, making sure all cars ready to depart as an assistant conductor double checks his manifest.
