A look out the back doors of Union Station toward the eight tracks. Only two of the tracks are currently used. Track 4 and 5 are reserved for Amtrak or other non-commuter rail trains. You can see the California Zephyr sitting on Track 4 in the background in this shot. I'm grateful that Union Station still has tracks behind it and will continue to be used as a transportation hub. Both the Union Pacific and Rio Grande depots in Salt Lake City have been preserved, but have no rails of any kind anywhere close to them anymore.

Welcome inside the new Union Station! Many of the old wood benches have been restored and are still available for waiting passengers. In some ways, that is about all that is the same inside the station. The great hall is now not only a waiting room for trains or buses, but it is the gateway to multiple shops and restaurants and is also the lobby for the Crawford Hotel. The second, third and fourth floor of the station has been refurbished as a hotel.

The underground walkway connecting Union Station to the Light Rail station about three blocks away is also RTD's new Denver hub for its buses. It replaced the Market Street Bus Station when it opened. It is laid out somewhat like an airport terminal, with bus "gates" along the sides of the walkway. Access to the eight tracks at Union Station is also possible via stairs and elevators.

There is now an underground walkway and bus ramp running perpendicular to the tracks behind Union Station. It runs from the station all the way to the Light Rail station a few block north along the tracks of the Joint Line. There are numerous points of entry to get to the ramp. This one is along Wewatta, showing stairs and escalators descending and a great picture of Union Station with the Silver Sky on the tail end of the Rio Grande Zephyr.

The Zephyr backs toward Train Hall at Union Station, passing Coors Field as well as the location of the temporary station, used until Train Hall at Union Station was completed. The concrete platform for the temp station has been torn up and the track all the way to the right now lays where it used to.

A wide-angle look at the southwest "canopy" over Train Hall behind Union Station. Tracks 4 and 5 (right and left, respectively) can be utilized by non-commuter rail trains such as Amtrak. It is nice to know there are two such tracks so, in July, Cheyenne Frontier Days will have a place to stay!

Although Amtrak has departed, I stuck around for a few extra minutes to take a few night shots of the now-deserted platforms of Train Hall. The silver cabinets with the orange connectors at the base are labeled "Amtrak Shore Power Cabinet". This implies that power is available to private cars parked at the station.

The neon sign is not currently illuminated on the back side of Union Station. Hopefully, this is as a result of the ongoing construction and not the result of a change in policy!

"Highball Denver!" The Zephyr is departing Track 4 and Train Hall 51 minutes late. There was a slight delay during the process of getting some "private varnish" attached at the tail end.

I very much look forward to the next time I am able to board a Superliner for a journey! I really hope that, at some point, I get the opportunity to ride in a Sleeping Car...something that I have not yet had the priviledge of doing! Note the yellow light location to the left of the door. This is a visual indicator that the air brakes on this Superliner are applied. Once released, the light will turn green.

The conductor for the Zephyr is on the ground, talking to the engineer on the head end. The Zephyr is picking up a private car, and the conductor is telling the engineer (in feet) how far is left before making the join. The two worked well together, earning applause from a group of passengers that watched the operation.

The Zephyr makes its way back down Track 4, the conductor standing in the door of the last Superliner to protect the shove back. An interested passenger paces along the train as it moves slowly backward.

The "Colorado Pine" is a Pullman-built lightweight passenger car. It is now owned by the San Luis and Rio Grande, located in southern Colorado. It was brought to Denver by the UP and delivered to Union Station. From here, the car will travel on the back of the California Zephyr to Chicago.

San Luis and Rio Grande's private car "Colorado Pine" was found sitting at the end of Track 4 in the newly built and opened "Train Hall" behind Union Station in Denver. The car is awaiting the arrival of the California Zephyr to take it east to Chicago.
