A pair of SD40-2s crosses 44th Avenue in Golden. The crew has finished their work for the day and they are headed for the yard office to tie the train down. Love the decorative pinwheels on BNSF 1833!

Wow! This was an amazing find in the middle of Colorado. One of Canadian National's 42 C40-8Ws showed up on this eastbound BNSF Provo-Lincoln manifests. This is one of the lowest numbered units on the CN roster, and one of very few standard cabs still wandering the rails on Class 1 railroads.

This BNSF Warbonnet looks to be in very good shape, considering how long its been since a paint job! A lot of Warbonnets these days are referred to as a "Pink Bonnet" because the red has faded so much. This one, fourth on this eastbound, looks good.

Five units (an ES44AC, an SD70ACe, and three SD70MACs) work hard to pull 80 cars of sand west through Barbara's Gulch. Each car weighs roughly 115 tons. That's 9,200 tons for the entire train. With the power on the train, it should have around 2.2 HPT. Just enough to keep it slowly rolling up the hill.

After meeting an empty oil train at Leyden, this westbound loaded sand train is grinding its way through Barbara's Gulch, barely making 10 MPH as it climbs the grade.

A nice, long telephoto shot of BNSF 4978 draws in North Table Mountain in Golden in the distance. While it may not seem like it due to the compression effect, the mountain is actually over four miles away to the south!

This eastbound oil train has actually been one of the slower BNSF train to travel from Grand Junction to Denver. The Grand Junction crew could only make it as far as Rollins, and it took some time for BNSF to get a fresh crew up to take the train the rest of the way. Thus, the total time from Grand Junction to Denver was around 21 hours.

BNSF oil trains are not exactly strangers to the Moffat, but this one is particularly odd. Most oil trains head west to load in Utah, and then return loaded. This one, however, is coming east empty. The train originated in Salt Lake City. Here, a semi and a car on CO-72 overtake the train, which is slowing for a red signal at West Leyden.

As May progresses and we get closer to June, afternoon thunderstorms will start to become more of the norm along the Colorado Plains. Today is no exception as clouds build up to the east as an eastbound BNSF manifest rolls by just 14 miles west of Denver.

Kickin' It Old School! A trio of C44-9Ws, two of which are still wearing the original Heritage scheme, lead an eastbound Provo-Lincoln between Rocky and Leyden. These Heritage C44-9Ws are sometimes referred to as "Goat Boats". The "Goat" is a reference to the scheme resembling Great Northern's scheme (which used a Goat in their logo). The "Boat" is a reference to GE's traditionally being referred to as "U-Boats" as GE's models once (primarily) because with the letter "U".

An eastbound Provo-Lincoln manifest is rolling through a Form B work zone. The zone is a mile long and is in effect from MP 14.25 to MP 15.25 from 0700 to 1730. I am not sure exactly what work is going on.

A Canadian National ES44DC leads a westbound oil train at De Beque on the Glenwood Springs Subdivision. If you look closely, you can see a white "D" (made out of rocks) on the hillside in the distance. The "D", of course, represents the town of De Beque.

An empty BNSF oil train is running on clear signals as it heads west on the main at De Beque, just about halfway between Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction. A rare visitor from the north leads the train on its journey.
