After a day shooting the Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado Railway, I was hoping to find a BNSF train headed for Denver for the chase home. I headed east on the Angora Sub and came across a westbound coal load between Buchanan and Sterling. The clouds had pretty much blown out by this afternoon, so the late afternoon winter lighting was fantastic!

Sporting New Image paint and air conditioning for the cab, BNSF 1984 will be the power on the Golden Switch (local) for the upcoming week. Interestingly, the middle radiator fan (at the back of the long hood) appears to be slightly smaller than the other two. Almost like the mid-fan on an SD35.

BNSF has a local that runs out of Golden, heading east on the Golden Sub on weekdays. On Saturdays, the power for the local is taken to Denver for refueling and servicing (if needed). If necessary, the power is even swapped out. On Sunday, the local power returns to Golden on the Beer Run. Here, BNSF 1660 and BNSF 1984, both SD40-2s, have the duty for the upcoming week.

An eastbound UP coal load is coming up to an approach (yellow) signal at the Pecos crossover. At the same time, BNSF's Beer Run is headed west on Main 3 on a approach restricting (red of lunar) signal. The crew on the Beer Run has dimmed its headline to avoid blinding the UP crew, even though it is daylight.

Not even 30 minutes after the sun crested the eastern horizon, BNSF's Provo-Denver is slowly rolling through the siding at Rocky. Interestingly, the train has a quintet of SD70ACes leading it east.

Usually, BNSF's Provo-Denver runs with three units on the point and two units DPU'd on the back. This morning, however, the train is running with five units on the point and no DPUs. The train is winding through Little Ten Curve on the siding at Rocky to meet the Winter Park Express.

Three units bring up the tail end of an eastbound loaded oil train. The final unit is a Kansas City Southern de Mexico Retro Belle. This unit, along with all of its brothers and sister, will eventually be repainted in the (predominantly red) paint scheme of the recently-formed CPKC. Born out of a merger between Canadian Pacific and KCS.

BNSF's strategy for powering their oil trains on the Moffat differs quite a bit from UP. UP will send westbound empty oil trains with anywhere from 2 to 6 units on the head end. When they come east, the power is usually 2 x something x something.

BNSF, on the other hand, pretty consistently run trains west with six units on the head end, and returns east on loads with three on the point and three DPUs on the end. Such is the case here, as three units lead this oil train east through Barbara's Gulch. Note the covered hoppers, which is serving as a buffer car (protection car) between the power and the oil train.

BNSF 4098 and two additional units are on the point of a southbound manifest on Main 1. The train has come to a stop at "The Sag", a location where southbounds frequently stop to cool off traction motors before continuing over Palmer Lake, and while waiting for northbound to come by. You can see a northbound that just came by on Main 2 in the distance.

A southbound BNSF manifest sits at "The Sag" on Main 1, waiting for its turn to head south over the top of the hill at Palmer Lake. Meanwhile, a northbound Q-Train zips by on Main 2 in the background. With the Q-Train now in the clear of the single track main ahead, BNSF 4098 has a clear (green) intermediate on the approach to Palmer Lake, and the manifest will start rolling south soon.

We are deep into "blue hour" as the light is quickly fading after sunset. The weather has been quite nice and it is still around 40°F (4°C) here at Palmer Lake as a northbound BNSF Q-Train leaves the single track behind and enters into the Track Warrant Control (TWC) limits of Main 2, dispatched by UP.

BNSF's Q-Train that runs from Alliance, TX to Portland, OR is approaching Palmer Lake and the top of Palmer Divide. The sun has set and the light is fading rapidly here at 4:35pm, ten days before Christmas. The first half of the train consists of doublestacks, the second half of the train is essentially a general manifest.

Official sunset is still about 20 minutes off, but the sun is well-hidden by the mountains on the west side of Palmer Lake. As we look north, we see a diverging clear signal, indicating a northbound is coming and will take the usual route onto Main 2.

BNSF 6339 and train have just crossed over the Royer Street grade crossing and are now approaching a clear (green) signal at the south end of Colorado Springs. This is one of the higher priority trains on the Joint Line, so BNSF's Denver South dispatcher is going to do what he can to keep the train moving.
