NS 7550 is the sole unit remaining on this eastbound covered hopper train after the crew took the lead two units to the east end of the siding. In the distance, you can see another eastbound pulling through the siding. The second unit from this train on Main 2 will be donated to the train in the siding as another one of its units failed.

Bringing up the tail end of this BNSF Provo-Denver manifest is a BNSF ES44AC and a Norfolk Southern AC44C6M (an NS rebuild from a C44-9W). Norfolk Southern has long been known for conducting rebuilds itself at its Altoona shops rather than contracting out for rebuilds. This is a practice that other Class 1 railroads are starting to embrace to avoid having to buy new, expensive Tier-4 compliant locomotives.

In the OS at the east switch of Leyden, two ES44ACs with an SD70ACe sandwiched between them lead the eastbound HPVODEN. After meeting two trains at Rocky, the manifest now has a straight shot the rest of the way in to the yard in Denver. As is extremely common in summer, clouds are forming over the Rockies to the west, and will like come spilling out over the plains this afternoon.

After about four months of being used for storage, the siding at Leyden has now been open and available for meets for the last month or so. An eastbound BNSF manifest is not meeting anyone this here this morning, so it is on the roll on the main track. If you look in the distance on the siding, you can see switches for the house track, which has been out of service now for many years.

BNSF 5856 leads the eastbound Provo-Denver manifest, sitting in the siding at Rocky. The train had to wait for the westbound Zephyr, which you can now see on the main in the distance (above the manifest), heading west. Alas, the crew of the manifest do not get to release the brakes quite yet as another westbound is coming between Leyden and Rocky.

In between Sedalia and Orsa, a southbound BNSF J-Train (a special) rolls through an S-Curve. The train just crossed over East Plum Creek, or rather the dry creek bed as there currently is no water in the creek. The train, which includes new Department of Energy cars heading for the testing center near Avondale, CO.

A pair of SD70ACes brings up the tail end of this southbound BNSF coal load at Orsa just north of Castle Rock. A bit of dust is being kicked up along the right-of-way. The track to the left is the siding of Orsa, which is hardly ever use due to directional running on the Joint Line.

Just north of Colorado Springs, a southbound BNSF coal load on Main 1 passes by the only siding on Main 1 between Littleton and Palmer. The siding of Orsa. The siding is not CTC controlled and, since Main 1 is almost always limited to southbound traffic only, the siding is hardly ever used.

A southbound BNSF special rolls by on Main 1, heading for the Joint Line. Forty years ago, this scene would've only had two tracks in view. Now, from left-to-right, we have Main 3 and Main 2, both owned by BNSF. Then, Main 1, owned by UP. The two tracks on the right are RTD's Light Rail tracks.

A southbound BNSF special is on Main 1 as a northbound tank train slows on Main 2, preparing to tie down at the intermodal signal the head end is approaching. There is another northbound on Main 2 in the next block, so this tank train currently has no place it can go. Additionally, a northbound BNSF coal emtpy is tied down on Main 3.

It is not uncommon for BNSF to tie trains down on Mains 2 and 3 between Littleton and South Denver to wait for recrews. Indeed, the coal load to left, on Main 1, had been tied down on Main 2 at Englewood. However, with a fresh crew onboard, the train is now pulling through the Littleton Trench alongside a northbound coal empty on Main 3.

The Department of Energy recently built this 12-axle nuclear waste car, named Atlas. The car will apparently be used by the Navy in the transportation of spent nuclear fuel from nuclear ships in the US fleet. The car is headed for the testing center near Avondale, CO

An ET44C4 leads a southbound BNSF special across the South Platte River. This track is used to connect the Joint Line to UP's North Yard and BNSF's Rennick's Yard. This train had to back out of BNSF's yard to Prospect Jct to then continue south here.
