A sharp looking SD40-2 (wearing the "New Image" scheme) sits north of BNSF's engine house, most likely awaiting a switching assignment either in the yard or on a local.

This is something of a rare shot in that there aren't currently any units at the fuel racks to the left of the engine house. Typically, there are several units there being serviced. On this Sunday, however, just a single SD40-2 sits idling away, awaiting assignment.

To say the performance of the westbound California Zephyr has been dismal lately would be something of an understatement! As of this shot, the last time the westbound Zephyr left Denver on time was on May 1...more than three months earlier! On this day, the Zephyr is a little over four hours late as it pulls through BNSF's yard.

The conductor for the westbound California Zephyr is on the ground, replacing the pad lock on this switch after throwing it. The switch had been aligned for the passenger lead after the eastbound Zephyr departed the night before. With the switch thrown, the arriving Zephyr can back down in to the station.

Amtrak is backing down toward the newly built "Train Hall" at Union Station. Note the track that comes to a sudden end to the left. This track will be part of the commuter rail line being constructed from Denver to Arvada and Wheat Ridge (the "Gold Line").

The Zephyr backs toward Train Hall at Union Station, passing Coors Field as well as the location of the temporary station, used until Train Hall at Union Station was completed. The concrete platform for the temp station has been torn up and the track all the way to the right now lays where it used to.

There is now an underground walkway and bus ramp running perpendicular to the tracks behind Union Station. It runs from the station all the way to the Light Rail station a few block north along the tracks of the Joint Line. There are numerous points of entry to get to the ramp. This one is along Wewatta, showing stairs and escalators descending and a great picture of Union Station with the Silver Sky on the tail end of the Rio Grande Zephyr.

The underground walkway connecting Union Station to the Light Rail station about three blocks away is also RTD's new Denver hub for its buses. It replaced the Market Street Bus Station when it opened. It is laid out somewhat like an airport terminal, with bus "gates" along the sides of the walkway. Access to the eight tracks at Union Station is also possible via stairs and elevators.

Welcome inside the new Union Station! Many of the old wood benches have been restored and are still available for waiting passengers. In some ways, that is about all that is the same inside the station. The great hall is now not only a waiting room for trains or buses, but it is the gateway to multiple shops and restaurants and is also the lobby for the Crawford Hotel. The second, third and fourth floor of the station has been refurbished as a hotel.

A look out the back doors of Union Station toward the eight tracks. Only two of the tracks are currently used. Track 4 and 5 are reserved for Amtrak or other non-commuter rail trains. You can see the California Zephyr sitting on Track 4 in the background in this shot. I'm grateful that Union Station still has tracks behind it and will continue to be used as a transportation hub. Both the Union Pacific and Rio Grande depots in Salt Lake City have been preserved, but have no rails of any kind anywhere close to them anymore.

For those of you that remember Union Station prior to its most recent (interior) makeover, you may recall that you had to leave the main hall and descend down a long ramp that ran underneath the tracks. That ramp was filled in the renovation and shops and restaurants were built over it. The store on the right side of this shot is the Tattered Covered bookstore. Five years ago, this shot would have shown that ramp descending to the right to get to the tracks!

The main hall of Union Station is now filled with internet/charging station, sofas and tables. What was once Amtrak's ticket office is now the Terminal Bar. One aspect of the station that did not return were the steal emblem cutouts of the railroads that once served the station. The used to be on the wall where the "Terminal Bar" sign is today.

These classy decals can be found on each of the windows in the doors into and out of the station. Personally, I thought that was a nice touch for the station.

Outside the back of Union Station is a canopy covering the stairs and escalators leading down to the bus ramp. Also note the word "Crawford" above the doorway to the right. The upper floors of the station are now a part of the Crawford Hotel.

Sitting on Track 5 behind Union Station was the Cripple Creek, a privately-owned car brought to Denver on the back of Amtrak. It is currently plugged in to the power cabinet (to the left) so the patrons have electricity inside the car.
