This GP40-2 is without a doubt my personal favorite on Union Pacific's roster. Why? It was the very first Rio Grande unit (GP40-2 or otherwise) to be patched and added to UP's roster. UP 5234 started life as DRGW 3122. In 1997, the unit was given a patch and renumbered to UP 5245. Here, ten years later, the unit still retains the same number and leads the Landmark Local west through Fruita on its way to Mack for some switching.

After traversing the Utah Desert and Ruby Canyon, Amtrak 6 is still moving quickly through the town of Mack, CO, about 10 miles (north) west of Grand Junction. Amtrak sports engines wearing the Phase Vb scheme, a bagage car sporting the Phase III scheme, and Superliners showing off the Phase IV scheme!
