It is about 20 minutes before sunrise at the east switch of Solitude in the Utah Desert. The dwarf signal remains on at all times at this location, whether there is a train present or not.

The Landmark Local has a clear signal to continue west out of Fruita and a very clear track ahead! The local sometime heads out into the Utah Desert as far as Cisco, but on this Tuesday, its switching duties won't take it further then Mack, CO.

This GP40-2 is without a doubt my personal favorite on Union Pacific's roster. Why? It was the very first Rio Grande unit (GP40-2 or otherwise) to be patched and added to UP's roster. UP 5234 started life as DRGW 3122. In 1997, the unit was given a patch and renumbered to UP 5245. Here, ten years later, the unit still retains the same number and leads the Landmark Local west through Fruita on its way to Mack for some switching.

At 7:15am, the MPVNY is quickly making its way toward the siding of Durham just outside Grand Junction. Once the train reaches Grand Junction, it will stop for several hours for switching, a crew change, and maintenance crews to clear east of Grand Junction.

It is very early in the morning (around 5:00am) as a westbound makes its way past the high green signal at the east end of Sagers. The train is a BNSF Denver to Stockton manifest making its way west across the Utah Desert.

The last train to pass by the east end of Sagers in daylight (well, what's left of it anyway) was BNSF's Stockton to Denver manifest. The last few hints of sunlight are rapidly fading at 9:00pm as BNSF 4861 east heads quickly toward Grand Junction.

A BNSF trackage rights train, the MDVRBJ (Denver to Riverbank, CA) pulles into the station track at Grand Junction (about fifteen minutes after Amtrak 5 made its departure westbound). The train will cut off some cars in Grand Junction before continuing west across the Utah Desert.

Amtrak 6 met the westbound Denver to Provo trackage rights train at the siding of Wash in the town of Wellington, UT. The sidings of Wellington and Wash lay right on top of one another. You can see the signals in the distance with the west switch of Wash leading directly into the east switch of Wellington.

Stars swirl behind the signal at the east switch of Mounds. Note one star that is inconsistent with the rest (near the top of the photo). That is actually a shooting star streaking through the atmosphere!
