The last bit of daylight is just about to disappear! The camera is setup on a tripod in preparation for nights shots at the west switch of Sagers in the middle of the Utah desert.

The sun is just inches away from dipping behind the horizon to the west. Meanwhile, we observe a new signal mast that UP has erected in preparation for replacing the old DRGW signal which has stood here for decades.

The shadows on the Book Cliffs from the late afternoon sun help to clearly define all the ridges as the westbound California Zephyr passes underneath US-6 with a special addition in tow. Previously owned by Rio Grande and later by the Ski Train, the car will now go to the American Railway Explorer in Los Angeles.

This is why I love coming to the Utah desert! Bathed in fantastic evening light, the westbound California Zephyr is about a mile west of the appropriately-named siding of Desert. In the distance, the Book Cliffs stand tall.

For what is likely the last time ever, the Kansas (previously the Wilson McCarthy) heads west in to Green River on the back of the California Zephyr. When it hitched a ride on the back in the 1980's, it would be dropped off in Salt Lake. Not this time however...it is on its way to Los Angeles, CA where it will now be based.

The California Zephyr is running right on time as it speeds west toward the oasis town of Green River, UT. This will end up being the last train over this stretch of track for the next six hours. Not a lot of traffic in the desert!

An unusual site for the Utah Desert...at least in 2012. In the 1980's, it was not uncommon to see the Kansas on the back of the California Zephyr when Rio Grande officials needed to go from Denver to Salt Lake City or vice versa. On those trips, the Zephyr would usually have a Rio Grande unit as a pilot on the front of the train.

For years, this car was known as the Wilson McCarthy when it was a business car for Rio Grande. It was renamed the Kansas and served many years on the Ski Train as one of the private cars (along with the Utah and California). Now, it has been rebranded for the "American Railway Explorer". This is a new service that will be based out of Los Angeles for trips up and down the coast. This may well be the last time the car is on former DRGW trackage! One last nail in the Ski Train coffin.

The westbound California Zephyr is right on time as it makes its way through the desolate scenery of the Utah Desert. On this day, the Zephyr happens to have a bonus car! The "Kansas" (previously the Wilson McCarthy) which was used as a business car for years on the Rio Grande, and later on the Ski Train, is being sent to Los Angeles, its new home.

The westbound California Zephyr is approaching the east switch of Utaline. The siding is so-named because the west switch falls right on the line of the Colorado/Utah border.

It is pretty impossible to get the right exposure on this shot on a clear day in the summer. The sun is on the north side of the canyon, guaranteeing trains will be in the shadows here. Regardless, we look down several hundred feet on the California Zephyr from the rim of Ruby Canyon.

Toward the west end of Ruby Canyon, McDonald Creek meets up with the Colorado River. Here, the California Zephyr crosses over the creek as it makes its way west. We are less than two miles away from the Colorado/Utah border (on the Colorado side).

Less than five minutes before the sun peaks over the Book Cliffs to the east, BNSF's Denver, CO to Provo, UT manifest has a clear signal at the east switch of Solitude. This is the first train to run over these tracks since a coal empty, seven hours earlier! The desert doesn't get much action these days.

The signal for the mainline at the east end of Solitude is right in between the mainline (on the left) and the siding (on the right).
